You may have seen or heard about aerial mosquito control happening over the marshes and swamps in the Greenwich and Logan Township area along the Delaware River.

Here's what's happening and why.

The Gloucester County Mosquito Control Division, working with the NJ State Office of Mosquito Control Coordination, is conducting an aerial larvicide treatment over wetland areas that are too large and too remote to treat from the ground. Although this tactic in the war against mosquitoes is more common in other parts of the state, it is a little more unusual here and never happens on a set schedule. It's triggered when inspectors find that mosquito larvae in an area have reached levels that could produce a significant population surge. Hence the short notice.

The product being used contains two components – a naturally occurring soil bacterium that attacks mosquito larvae and a control agent that mimics a natural hormone that prevents larvae from maturing into adults. This dual action works across all four larval stages to provide more complete results. Because it's a pelletized granule dropped into wetlands — not a spray — there are no drift concerns for nearby residential areas. However, this treatment will not attack mosquitoes that have already developed into adults nor will it eliminate mosquitoes in nearby residential areas.

This is actually a great example of how mosquito control works best. The state targets the large-scale breeding sources that no individual homeowner or service provider could ever reach. The county targets adult mosquitoes in common areas on a one-time basis when those levels get too high. Property-level treatments like ours then focus on where mosquitoes breed and harbor in your own yard. These regularly scheduled treatments create a barrier that repels mosquitoes from the places where your family and friends actually spend time.

With the type of rainfalls we have received recently, it is not surprising that this type of treatment is being done now and why we're seeing increased mosquito activity in our area.

Q: Why do mosquitoes in South Jersey seem most active in the evening, just as people are heading outside?

Most species become active at dusk because the drop in temperature and light signals safe conditions without the dehydration risk of peak heat. Culex mosquitoes, among the most common in New Jersey, are especially active from evening into nighttime. The window that feels best for being outside is often the same one mosquitoes are most prepared to use.
