We finished the basement and storage room. We are done with the interior of the house. We pulled everything out of the garage rafters, so we just need to get it loaded.

Cleaning Tip

"Hard work is often the easy work you did not do on time." -Bernard Metzler, quoted from Everyday Tidiness.

While not always the case, most jobs are far easier if completed on a regular basis. It's far easier to wash dishes and clean the kitchen right after cooking and eating, then it is to do the job a week later when spills and residues have hardened on counteracts and dishes. If you can't clean the dishes right away, rinse them off or soak them so they are easier to clean later

It is usually very hard to get rid of things; you never know when you might need it or it might be helpful. Maybe it's just super cute or it was expensive. However, living simply helps us have more time and energy to do things we enjoy a lot more than cleaning up and organizing things we rarely use. There are lots of methods for eliminating unnecessary items. One I have recently implemented is turning all the hangers in my closet backwards. Anything still backwards at the end of the year went unused for 6 months. Unless it is seasonal or something really special, I should get rid of it. Even those things should be looked at critically.

The same thing is applicable for storage containers. Put the date on all storage totes when you sort them or organize them. Anything that has not had the date updated in over a year probably has things in it you never use. Look through it and see what you can donate to a second hand store.

It is much easier to do daily or weekly maintenance cleaning than it is to clean an area that hasn't been cleaned or organized in a while. It takes much less time overall. It doesn't require as much elbow grease to scrub areas that are cleaned regularly. Little habits, like rinsing off dishes before stacking them and wiping counters while residue is still soft, makes a huge difference.
