Edging of the carpet gets dirty. Carpet cleaners don't clean it so it builds over time. Do not rub! That will damage the carpet texture. Spray water liberally with a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid onto the dirty area. Gently message the area to draw the dirty liquid into a clean cloth. It might need several applications. You will enjoy the results!

The round figure on the left is a folded paper towel after having been used to clean the roller and teeth of a can opener. One simply clamps the opener onto the paper towel as in opening a can. Watch the gunk work its way off of the opener as one twists the crank.
