🧼 This before & after came with an important car seat safety lesson!
This seat was practically brand new, but it had been stored outside under a shed for some time. When it came to Scrub Mama, it was covered in cut grass, dirt, dust, and outdoor debris. Thankfully, after taking it apart and thoroughly inspecting it, there were no visible signs of mold or mildew on the padding or harness straps — which was especially lucky considering our Louisiana heat and humidity!
It gave me a great opportunity to talk with this mama about something many parents simply don’t know: where and how you store a car seat matters.
Car seats can be sensitive to moisture, humidity, and extreme temperatures. Mold can develop surprisingly quickly, even when a storage space seems protected. And if mold does develop on certain parts of a seat, safely cleaning it may not be possible within the manufacturer’s permitted cleaning methods. Harsh chemicals, soaking, high heat, or other aggressive methods used to kill mold can themselves damage or alter components of the restraint.
That can turn a perfectly good car seat into a very expensive loss. 😩
✨ The takeaway: Always check your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and storage. When possible, store unused seats clean, completely dry, indoors in a dry, temperature-controlled space, ideally protected in their original box or another way consistent with the manufacturer’s guidance.
And this is exactly why Scrub Mama isn’t just about making seats look clean. Every seat is treated as what it actually is: a piece of safety equipment. 💛
This one cleaned up BEAUTIFULLY and is back to looking like the new seat it really is! 🧼✨
