I want to talk today about something no one wants to discuss. Bed Bugs. These parasitic insects are a deeply personal issue and are seldom talked about. Let’s start by dismissing some claims.

1. Only “dirty” or “unclean” homes have bed bug issues.

False..ANYONE can acquire bed bugs. They are notorious hitchhikers and can be transported and picked up from anywhere but most commonly while on vacation or visiting someone else’s home. Rats, mice, cockroaches etc. are attracted to filth because that is what they feed off of. Bed Bugs only feed on blood.

2 You will know if you have bed bugs.

Only partially true. Something to keep in mind is that only 40% of the human population is effected by bed bug bites. Many times they go unnoticed due to the fact that they are only active when there is little to no movement in the area they are nesting. Bed Bugs do not like movement so that is why we are bitten while we sleep. The photo of the penny for size shows how small they are and a full grown adult will not be much larger than Lincoln’s head on a penny.

3. Bed Bugs transmit disease.

False… Bed Bugs have been shown to carry markers for certain pathogens but do not transmit them to humans. The greatest danger is from infection from the bites themselves and possible severe allergic reaction not to mention the psychological toll they can take from loss of sleep.

Spring is upon us and if you haven’t seen these yet you surely will.

The first two pictures are paper wasps. Named because of the paper like substance they build their nests with. Found under eaves, soffits and any other protected area. Normally non aggressive unless there nest is disturbed or they feel threatened they can deliver a painful sting. These wasps are bennificial by keeping other insect species in check but can be a nuisance when nesting near homes.

Second set of photos is the Bald Faced Hornet named because of the all black body and nearly all white face, actually a Yellowjacket these are considered hornets because of their size…their nests are built in over hanging branches or eaves and can grow quite large in size. They become a problem when located near a home and normally docile will sting if the nest is disturbed or they feel threatened.

In the third set of photos is the Mud Dauber so named because of the tube nests built from mud. Solitary in nature and docile, they are beneficial because they can keep the spider population down. They build their nests in very protected areas such as sheds/barns, inside of window seams and under eaves. Non aggressive even if the nest is disturbed however can become a nuisance with nest building.
