Everyone’s keen to spruce up old homes for fun and profit. It’s more or less a national sport these days thanks to renovation shows on TV. And while a lot of us are quick to dive cheerfully into a home renovation, many of those who are new to it (and even some of those who’ve done it for a while) don’t really understand the serious hidden risks they might face. Few people realize how much of a risk lead paint can be – and just how common it is in older homes.
Lead is a soft metal, and a chemical element that was used in paints for a very long time as an additive. Lead’s highly poisonous if it’s inhaled or swallowed. If you’re renovating or even just maintaining a home built before 1997, especially those built before 1970, you’ll need to be extremely careful about the way in which you deal with any lead paint.
Ingesting lead in the form of dust or flakes from old paint which has either deteriorated or been damaged, can lead to lead poisoning, which affects every organ and system in the human body. Long-term exposure to lead is particularly dangerous.

These photos show loose-fill insulation. Loose-fill insulation was designed to be poured onto attic floors and in wall cavities. It is often made of asbestos contaminated vermiculite. It is very dangerous due to its light weight- a subtle air current can disturb it, sending inhalable asbestos fibers into the air. Zonolite was a notorious insulation brand that was made with contaminated vermiculite and installed in millions of American homes as far back as the 1940’s!

the highest concentration of naturally occurring asbestos in VA can be found along the ? These fibrous minerals are usually sealed away safely in the rocks and soil. However, mining and construction can disturb deposits and release airborne fibers which can cause health issues if inhaled.

We demolished a whole house in Free Union Va last weekend! After removing some asbestos caulking from the back window and door frame, demo began. In the past, asbestos fibers were added during the production of siding materials to make them more durable. The use of asbestos in siding has rapidly decreased since the early 1980s. Typical siding products containing asbestos include cement-asbestos board (aka transite siding), wood shake v***r barriers, “slate” siding, mastics and even paints!
