With the unusual warmer weather we have been having in December & January, Mrs.Bzzz Pest has been receiving phone calls from Our customers reporting small ants in certain areas of the home. The most common areas at this time of year are homes that are on slab and have radiant heat. Expansion joints and cracks in slab provide entrance into the home for ants in search of food and water.
Long term success of our Pest Programs for ants depends on the client being educated by our technician on key points of pest ant biology, detection, and contributing factors including:

1)Cracks in slab and foundation.
2)Poor Sanitation
3)Composition and depth of landscape mulch
4)Moisture damage from poor ventilation, dirt to wood contact(siding of home), clogged gutters, and leaky pipes.

At this time of year treatments can be tricky to eliminate these slab ants because there is no foraging outside the structure, only under the slab near heat sources or vent ducts. Mrs.Bzzz Pests preferred choice of treatment at this time is baits, which the foraging ants will eat, bring back to the rest of the colony, distribute to colony, than colony is eliminated. Cracks in the slab than can be sealed to prevent future colonies from re-entry.

Powder Post Beetles: The small pin like holes are from powder post beetles, which is a wood destroying beetle that eats the floor joists in your home. Commonly found in older homes that used old barn beams for supports.

Cave Crickets AKA Camel Crickets.....Northern New Jersey's Worst House Guest!!!!

You are sitting on the couch getting ready to watch your favorite sitcom when you hear a dreaded yell from your wife who just went down to the basement. Upon racing down the stairs, your wife yells...."It's time to call an exterminator, we have huge crickets that look like something from a horror movie!"

Cave Crickets (camel crickets)...the name is derived from the strongly humpbacked thorax that resembles the hump of a camel. Camel crickets are observed by the homeowner in the evening when the lights are turned on in a dark room. Due to their size and jumping ability, these critters can be very intimidating. Their colors vary from light tan to dark brown. They overwinter as nymphs or adults and lay eggs in the spring with hatching occurring in April.

On the outside of the home they are found in heavy leaf litter, under logs, firewood, or other cool damp areas. They move into the home in the fall when looking for a place to overwinter. Inside homes they are found mainly in crawl spaces usually with dirt floors, damp basements, and also may be found in living areas, garages, and storage rooms.

MANAGEMENT OF CAMEL CRICKET INFESTATIONS:
Mrs.Bzzz Pest & Termite Solutions will treat walls in basements or crawl spaces where camel crickets are found resting. Sill plate areas are treated with a dust product. Vertical walls are spot treated with a microencapsulated formulation. Perimeter treatments to the exterior foundation and perimeter of the home will help minimize the number of crickets seen indoors.
ELIMINATION OF MOISTURE SOURCES is critical in controlling large populations of these crickets. V***r barriers in crawl spaces and a dehumidifier is essential in conjunction with our chemical application.

German Cockroaches!!

This cockroach has a worldwide distrubution and is the most prevalent species in and around homes, apartments, restaurants, supermarkets, food processing plants, and hospitals. German roaches are primarily found in kitchens and bathrooms, places where daily access to water is available.If the sanitation is poor roaches can invade all areas of a structure where food, water, and harborage exist.

The german roach produces more eggs per case than any other pest cockroach species. The female german roach carry their egg cases until they are ready to hatch, and the capsule is dropped in areas distant from other cockroaches. This behavior facilitates spread of cockroach populations within structures. One female cockroach is capable of laying 25 to 45 nymphs at once.

Many homes and business establishments become infested with cockroaches when they are introduced inside infested cartons, foodstuffs, and other materials. Many times restaurants develop roach problems when they get a delivery from a vendor that just picked up empty cases at another restaurant that was infested, thus spreading them to their restaurant.

BAT GUANO!!!

Can you believe this photo?? This picture was taken in one of our customer's basements. It shows the entire floor COVERED in bat guano!! The bats were roosting around the flashing of the chimney on the roof. The droppings were falling down through the voids to the basement floor. Bat exclusions are best to be performed in very late fall, to early winter once you are sure the bats are not roosting in structure anymore.
Please call us as soon as possible to avoid having to clean up a mess like this in your house!!

Tree Squirrels....Grays....Reds....and Flying Squirrels....Winter Invaders!!

This time of year means Squirrels looking for warmth and shelter inside homes attics, soffits, and voids. Squirrels gain access through vents, gaps under eaves and gables, and dormers. Sometimes uncapped chimneys provide entry. Usually once squirrels have entered a home or building their presence is known rather quickly. Flying squirrels may go undetected for awhile due to they are active only at night. Utility companies often report loss of electric and telephone service by gnawing into cables and stripping insulation. This damage can cause shortages, and possibly fires.

Controlling Tree Squirrels:

Squirrels can be a challenging pest to control by the typical homeowner because a it requires ladder work and working on roofs in dangerous situations. Here are some suggestions provided by Mrs.Bzzz that we have found successful and have implemented in our pest services:

1. Prune all trees back from the structure of your home, which will eliminate easy access to your home by these critters.

2. Keep all bird feeders away from structures at least 50 feet, and also refrain from feeding squirrels in your backyard.

3. No EPA-registered rodenticides are available for squirrel control.

4.Exclusion and Live-Trapping. If the population must be reduced, live traps are set in precise areas that squirrels use to gain access inside homes. Also Mrs.Bzzz will install one way release valve doors to let squirrels exit your home, but not regain entry back into your home. Mrs.Bzzz squirrel services are quite unique and each and every home has different challenges.
