I'm back with another installment of "Tips and Tricks" for tackling your home. With kids getting out of school for the year, Graduation parties, and even an Anniversary party for my grandparents 65th wedding anniversary (wow!), not to mention work as normal, it's been a very busy couple of weeks!

I recently saw a post where someone was asking how to get sticky residue from the glue of a sticker off of a window and thought that might be the perfect topic. There are many products made for this type of thing including Goo Gone to name one. Most of those products are expensive, not to mention can be very toxic. I have found that plain old Rubbing alcohol and a rag will work just as good, if not better for these types of jobs. Every once in a while you may have to use a razor blade along with the Alcohol but more times than not the Alcohol will loosen everything up enough to get anything off with a rag. I have used Alcohol to remove stickers, duct tape, and even some unnamed stickiness from everything from screen doors and windows to oven sides to plastic toys and even cars and gotten excellent results. So next time you're looking for a quick fix, try Alcohol first before running out to the hardware store to purchase other high priced cleaners. Most everyone has Alcohol in their cabinet and if not, it only cost about $1 for an entire bottle! 😃

Whoa it's been a crazy week! It's taken a bit to be able to get back here and sit down but here we go! This week's "Tips and Tricks" as requested, deals with carpet spots and stains.

I like to use Oxy Clean powder to lift away stains. In an empty spray bottle, dissolve 1 scoop of Oxy Clean powder into warm water. I suggest adding the powder after the water as it likes to bubble up otherwise as the spray bottle fills and then much of your stain fighting solution will end up in the sink instead of on your carpet! Once the Oxy Clean is fully dissolved into the water, spray a mist onto the areas with stains and/or spots and let stand for 10 to 20 minutes. Then use a soft scrub brush or toothbrush to gently lift away the stains. (It is always a good idea to test a small out of sight area when using a new cleaner. Different types of carpeting and even different manufacturers will react in their own way.) Finally, spray a mist of clean water over the area and press a dry cloth over it several times and let air dry the rest of the way. This may have to be repeated several times depending on the amount of cleaner that was sprayed onto the area. You can also use this solution as a pre-treat before carpet cleaning by spraying the entire room and letting it set for 10 to 20 minutes before taking a carpet cleaning machine over it.

I have tried several types of cleaners throughout the years, even some very expensive and "as seen on TV" remedies. I always come back to Oxy Clean as I think it works the best for carpet stains and pre-treating. I hope you have as good of results as I have had with it! (The attached photos are before and after shots from a unit.)

Wow 6 years ago today I filed the legal paperwork to officially open Shan's Cleaning, got liability insurance, and got my 1st commercial job! I believe the very 1st commercial job was the post construction final clean for the remodel of Things Remembered in Southridge Mall. A week or so later we did Crazy 8's there too and a Men's Warehouse in Milwaukee. That seems like an ice age ago! I was doing jobs pretty much as "side work" before then. Thank you to everyone who has helped make it a success! :)
