Today, we were made aware of a customer at our Laurel Hill location posting a photo of an unhoused individual inside our laundromat, taking shelter from the torrential rain. We want to be very clear: sharing photos of unhoused people online is inappropriate, harmful, and in extremely bad taste. It harms the individual, and it misrepresents our business and how we handle these rare situations.
At Laundry For Less, when we are notified about someone in distress, (which happens once or twice per year) we work directly with, in this case, the Norwich PD to ensure the person is removed safely, respectfully, and whenever possible, connected with appropriate housing support. Every person deserves dignity — not to have their photo posted on the internet.
If anyone ever sees something concerning in our laundromats, please contact us directly through Facebook or by calling our answering service. We did receive one call this morning about this situation, but the caller hung up before providing the information our service needed to pass along to me. Anyone that knows me/us knows we always respond quickly, and direct communication allows us to help both our customers and the individual in need.
If you know the person who took and posted the photo, please inform them that they are no longer welcome in any of our locations. We expect all customers to treat others — housed or unhoused — with basic respect and humanity.
