Important information about this winter’s weather events that have caused havoc this year. Yeah! The sunshine is nice, boo the sunshine is pushing the frost in the ground further.
No ground cover for our first big deep freeze -27 between Vine and Pittman end of December beginning of January started this. Snow insulates the ground. Some of our customers started experiencing the freezing of their systems and unfortunately we have more who are just starting to experience trouble this spring.
Every time the weather got warmer after minus temperatures the frost is pushed into the ground farther. The phone starts ringing 4 to 5 days after the warmer weather with more people freezing up. It is going to get worse for the leach fields/septic systems and that is from warming up.
Every time a healthy human goes potty they put bacteria in their septic system. Yes the bacteria want to be the temperature of a human body, our septic systems are never this warm and our bacteria hibernate and don’t break down (eat the solids). If you are wanting to help your system don’t flush toilet paper. Adding bacteria enzymes to your tank is of little value. The DEC and EPA do not recommend using any chemicals and instead recommend pumping more often. Bidet toilet seats will cut down on the flushing of toilet paper by not needing it.
Why on earth would anyone recommend flooding a leach field with water is beyond me. By leaving water running so your water doesn’t freeze and putting it in your septic tank is huge burden for your leach field. If your leach field is frozen you have a holding tank. My family of 4 lived in Wasilla on city water using an average of 6000 gallons of water per month it took 4 to 5 days to refill our septic tank. We would have to pump 6 times a month if our leach field froze using water the same way with a “holding tank”. We never let our water drip, toilets run, or left water on to keep well and pipes from freezing. Running the water stresses the septic system. What happens when you go to sleep and you leave the water run with no place to go? “septic full” as my customers say when the water won’t leave the house? You will wake up to a flooded yucky mess.
I understand that your water will freeze if not lightly drizzling. You can run the water outside by hooking a garden hose up or something a long this line but do not have the water go into your septic system because you are asking for premature septic system failure.
