🚿🧽✨ CLEAN LIKE A PRO!
SOAP SCUM: WHY YOUR SHOWER STILL LOOKS DIRTY EVEN AFTER YOU SCRUB IT! 😩
Have you ever spent 30 minutes scrubbing your shower, only to step back and STILL see that cloudy, white, sometimes yellowish buildup?!
Or maybe the bottom half of your shower surround feels rough, sticky, or almost waxy?
Well, today we’re sharing some PROFESSIONAL CLEANING KNOWLEDGE! 🧪🧴
At Southern Home Sweet Home Cleaning, we’ve tackled our fair share of showers with YEARS of buildup. Some of these showers haven’t had a proper deep cleaning in a very long time!
And one thing we’ve learned after years in this industry?
It’s not always about scrubbing HARDER. It’s about understanding WHAT you’re cleaning, choosing the RIGHT chemical, and knowing HOW to use it!
Today we’re specifically talking about fiberglass and acrylic shower surrounds — NOT tile showers!
🚿 FIRST — WHAT ACTUALLY IS SOAP SCUM?!
Here’s where a little science comes in!
Traditional soap reacts with minerals commonly found in water, particularly calcium and magnesium.
This reaction creates insoluble compounds called calcium and magnesium soaps. These deposits cling to shower surfaces and can be difficult to remove with ordinary cleaners.
Now add in:
🧴 Body oils and lotions
🫧 Shampoo and conditioner residue
🚿 Hard-water minerals
🧼 Soap residue
🦠 Dead skin cells and everyday grime
And you’ve got yourself a stubborn buildup!
Over time, these deposits can accumulate in layers, creating that cloudy, chalky, yellowish, or sometimes sticky film.
And here’s something important: NOT ALL SHOWER BUILDUP IS THE SAME!
That means one cleaning product isn’t necessarily going to tackle every type of buildup equally!
🧪 LET’S TALK CLEANING CHEMICALS!
This is where understanding a little chemistry can save you a LOT of unnecessary scrubbing!
There are two major categories of cleaning chemistry we’re discussing today:
🟢 ACIDIC CLEANERS
Acidic products are particularly effective at dissolving certain mineral deposits, including calcium carbonate (limescale).
These are often helpful for:
✔️ Hard-water stains
✔️ Chalky mineral deposits
✔️ Calcium buildup
✔️ Certain types of soap scum
🔵 ALKALINE CLEANERS
Alkaline cleaners are commonly used to break down greasy and fatty soils.
These can be useful for:
✔️ Body oils
✔️ Greasy residue
✔️ Lotion buildup
✔️ Certain organic soils
💡 PRO TIP: A shower can have BOTH mineral deposits and greasy residue at the same time!
That’s one reason heavy shower buildup can be so stubborn.
But remember — the product must ALSO be compatible with the material you’re cleaning!
🧴 LET’S BREAK DOWN SOME CLEANING PRODUCTS!
These are products we discuss and work with in professional cleaning, but they aren’t all interchangeable or appropriate for every shower.
🟢 1️⃣ ZEP SHOWER, TUB & TILE CLEANER
This is one of the more practical products to consider when tackling soap scum and hard-water buildup.
WHY DOES IT WORK?
Its acidic cleaning chemistry helps break down mineral-based deposits and loosen stubborn soap scum.
For compatible fiberglass and acrylic shower surfaces, follow the bottle’s directions.
Generally, the process involves:
✔️ Applying the product evenly.
✔️ Allowing the labeled dwell time (approximately 2–3 minutes for the applicable formula).
✔️ Gently agitating with a non-scratch sponge.
✔️ Thoroughly rinsing the surface.
✨ PROFESSIONAL TIP: Let the product work BEFORE reaching for the scrubber!
More scrubbing isn’t always the answer.
🟠 2️⃣ ZEP CALCIUM, LIME & RUST REMOVER
Now let’s talk about those stubborn white, crusty deposits!
This type of product is designed to dissolve mineral buildup.
Think:
✔️ Calcium deposits
✔️ Limescale
✔️ Certain rust stains
✔️ Stubborn hard-water residue
These products use acidic chemistry to attack deposits that ordinary detergents may struggle to remove.
BUT BE CAREFUL!
The concentrated Zep Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover has specific dilution and short contact-time instructions. For tubs and sinks, the manufacturer’s directions include a 50/50 dilution with warm water and rinsing within 60 seconds.
It is not automatically safe for every acrylic, fiberglass, metal, or coated surface.
Always verify the exact product label and shower manufacturer’s recommendations.
🔵 3️⃣ CLR — THE GRAY BOTTLE!
Another product homeowners often recognize!
CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover is formulated to tackle mineral deposits.
Its acidic ingredients react with and help dissolve certain mineral buildups.
For approved surfaces, the manufacturer’s instructions generally recommend starting with equal parts CLR and warm water, keeping contact time to no more than 2 minutes, and rinsing thoroughly.
⚠️ IMPORTANT!
The gray-bottle CLR Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover and CLR Brilliant Bath are DIFFERENT products!
Do not assume that because one CLR product is compatible with a particular shower surface, another one is too.
Always check the exact bottle!
⚪ 4️⃣ SOFT SCRUB
Soft Scrub can be useful for tackling certain types of shower grime and stubborn stains.
But did you know there are DIFFERENT Soft Scrub formulas?!
Some contain abrasive cleaning ingredients.
Others contain bleach.
And some are formulated for different types of surfaces.
This matters because fiberglass and acrylic surrounds can scratch, dull, or become damaged when the wrong cleaner or scrubbing tool is used.
✔️ Select a formula approved for the surface.
✔️ Use gentle, non-scratch tools.
✔️ Follow the manufacturer’s directions.
✔️ Rinse thoroughly.
🚫 And NEVER combine bleach-containing Soft Scrub with CLR, acidic Zep cleaners, or other cleaning chemicals!
🔴 5️⃣ EASY-OFF HEAVY DUTY OVEN CLEANER!
Now here’s one that might surprise some of you!
YES — our professional cleaning team has used Easy-Off Heavy Duty on select showers with EXTREMELY stubborn buildup.
But let’s explain the chemistry behind WHY it can sometimes remove certain types of grime!
Easy-Off Heavy Duty contains sodium hydroxide, also known as lye.
This is a strongly ALKALINE chemical.
It’s designed to break down heavy grease and organic soils, which is why it’s effective in its intended application: cleaning ovens!
Now think about what builds up inside a shower over time.
Body oils, lotions, conditioners, and greasy residues can become part of that stubborn film.
Strong alkaline chemistry can help break down certain fatty substances.
BUT HERE’S THE IMPORTANT PART!
Easy-Off Heavy Duty is NOT formulated or manufacturer-approved for fiberglass or acrylic shower surrounds.
Its corrosive ingredients can damage the surface, dull the finish, and cause serious chemical burns.
Even though our team has experience with it in certain heavy-buildup situations, we do NOT recommend homeowners use oven cleaner on shower surrounds.
And it is NOT the appropriate choice for dissolving hard-water mineral scale.
Just because a chemical is powerful doesn’t mean it’s the safest or most effective choice for the surface!
Professional knowledge includes understanding the limitations and risks of the products we use.
🚿 NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT THE ACTUAL CLEANING PROCESS!
Here’s how to approach a fiberglass or acrylic shower surround with stubborn soap scum buildup using products approved for that surface.
STEP 1️⃣ — CLEAR EVERYTHING OUT!
Remove shampoo bottles, soaps, razors, loofahs, and shower accessories.
You need access to the ENTIRE shower.
Pay attention to:
✔️ Lower shower walls
✔️ Corners and ledges
✔️ Around fixtures
✔️ The shower floor
✔️ Areas where water regularly collects
STEP 2️⃣ — IDENTIFY WHAT YOU’RE CLEANING!
This is a big one!
Is the buildup:
🤍 White and chalky?
🟡 Yellowish and waxy?
🧴 Sticky or greasy?
🚿 Rough and crusty?
Different appearances can indicate different combinations of mineral scale, soap residue, body oils, and other soils.
And sometimes what looks like buildup is actually permanent staining, scratching, or deterioration of the shower finish.
STEP 3️⃣ — CHOOSE YOUR PRODUCT!
For many compatible fiberglass and acrylic surrounds, a dedicated soap-scum cleaner such as Zep Shower, Tub & Tile Cleaner can be a reasonable starting point.
Check the exact label and test a small, inconspicuous area.
Wear appropriate gloves and eye protection, and ensure adequate ventilation.
STEP 4️⃣ — LET YOUR CHEMICAL DO ITS JOB!
Here’s a mistake we see ALL THE TIME!
People spray a cleaner and immediately start scrubbing.
STOP!
Many products need a little contact time to loosen the buildup.
But longer is NOT always better!
Follow the specific product’s labeled dwell time.
Don’t allow the cleaner to dry on the surface.
And don’t assume that leaving an acidic cleaner on for 20 minutes will work better than the manufacturer’s recommended time.
You can permanently damage a finish that way!
STEP 5️⃣ — AGITATE THE BUILDUP!
Now it’s time to loosen that grime!
For fiberglass and acrylic surrounds, we recommend using surface-safe tools such as:
✔️ Soft, non-scratch sponges
✔️ Microfiber cloths
✔️ Soft-bristled detail brushes where appropriate
Work in manageable sections.
Use gentle, overlapping motions rather than aggressive pressure.
And here’s another important tip!
🚫 Avoid steel wool, razor blades, harsh scouring pads, and stiff drill brushes on fiberglass and acrylic!
Scratching the surface can make future cleaning even MORE difficult because grime can collect in those tiny imperfections.
STEP 6️⃣ — RINSE, INSPECT, AND REPEAT IF NECESSARY!
Thoroughly rinse away the cleaner and loosened residue.
Inspect the surface.
Still seeing buildup?
Sometimes heavily neglected showers require multiple cleaning passes.
That’s NORMAL!
Repeat the appropriate, surface-safe process rather than immediately reaching for the strongest chemical available.
And remember:
🚫 NEVER mix cleaning chemicals!
🚫 NEVER layer acidic and alkaline cleaners!
🚫 NEVER combine bleach with acidic cleaners!
If switching products, completely rinse away the previous chemical and follow all label precautions.
STEP 7️⃣ — DON’T FORGET TO DRY!
Once your shower has been cleaned and thoroughly rinsed, use a clean microfiber cloth to dry the surfaces.
WHY?!
Because as water evaporates, dissolved minerals can remain behind and create new spots.
Drying helps prevent that immediate cloudy appearance from returning.
✨ BONUS PRO TIP: MAINTENANCE MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!
Want to prevent your shower from getting back to this condition?
✔️ Use a shower squeegee after bathing.
✔️ Wipe down shower walls regularly.
✔️ Keep shampoo bottles and products from sitting in puddles of water.
✔️ Run your bathroom exhaust fan.
✔️ Address mineral buildup before it becomes thick.
✔️ Keep up with routine cleaning!
And if your home has particularly hard water, consider having your water hardness tested.

🚿 RINSING — Removing loosened grime and chemical residue.
🏡 SURFACE PROTECTION — Knowing what products and techniques are safe for the material you’re cleaning.
And here’s something else we want homeowners to understand!
NOT EVERY SHOWER CAN BE RESTORED TO BRAND NEW!
Some showers have years of scratches, worn finishes, permanent discoloration, or damage from improper chemical use.
No amount of scrubbing can reverse certain types of damage.
And trying to force a perfect result can actually make things WORSE!
A good professional cleaner knows when to keep cleaning and when to recognize the limitations of the surface.
