In 1981 I completed monthly training classes for the environmental services team at a major hospital in Wilmington, DE. The training room was clean prior to the start of the meetings but when the classes were over there was always individuals who would leave empty cups on the tables or trash on the floors. After one class I placed a paper towel folded up on the floor and one of the housekeepers picked it up and placed it in a trashcan. I called everyone back into the meeting room and asked the individual who picked up the paper towel and remove the money that I placed inside the paper. I thanked him for picking it up and told him to keep the money. He acted like it was a $100 bill. I spoke about the importance of keeping the health care facility clean like it was prior to the meeting. Many years later when I was back at the hospital many of the cleaners told me that they never forgot that class and wished they would of picked up that $100 bill. They never walked over soil on the floor again without removing it.
