Got to do an interesting one today!

Yellow jackets had built a nest inside the ceiling, with the nest actually coming through the drywall. Definitely not something you see every day!

Opened it up, cut around the nest for the maintenance team to seal back up, removed the nest, and took care of the problem. You can see how large the nest actually was once I started opening it up. No stings.

All in a day’s work. 💪🐝

Got called out for a beautiful lawn infested with ants creating some dead spots and mounds. I baited the area and checked back within 5 minutes. Bait is already working. You can see the ants rushing out to store the bait and share it among the nest. This yard should be ant free soon!

Queen vs. Worker Yellowjacket

Got called out for an underground yellowjacket nest. After treating and removing the nest, we were able to pull out the queen and a worker for comparison.

Notice the difference in size!

Yellowjacket queens are significantly larger than the workers because they are the colony’s primary reproductive females. Queens overwinter and emerge in the spring to establish new colonies, while the workers that hatch later take over foraging, nest building, and defense.

By late summer, colonies can contain hundreds or even thousands of yellowjackets, depending on the species and colony conditions.

Last weekend we took the boys down to Eastern Market to support local vendors and be apart of the community. One of the stops we made was Amadore Beverages. You’re going to hear a lot about ticks this year — and for good reason. I’ll be sharing more info soon, but here are some practical, proven ways to protect yourself and your family:

• Avoid tall grass, brush, and overgrown areas when possible
• Stick to the center of trails when hiking
• Wear long pants and tuck them into your socks or boots
• Tuck in your shirt to limit exposed skin
• Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot
• Use EPA-approved repellents like DEET or picaridin on exposed skin
• Consider treating clothing and gear with permethrin (do not apply directly to skin)
• Do a full-body tick check as soon as you get home
• Shower within a couple hours of being outdoors when possible
• Keep pets protected with vet-recommended flea & tick treatments
