What is it?

It’s a cicada killer wasp—and despite the intimidating name and size, it’s actually one of the more misunderstood insects we see this time of year.

These giant wasps can grow to nearly 2 inches long and often cause a little panic when they show up around homes. The good news? They’re not aggressive toward people. Males can’t sting at all, and females are usually focused on hunting cicadas and digging burrows rather than bothering you.

You may notice them flying low over bare patches of soil, mulch, or sandy areas. That’s where they’re making their nests.

While they can be startling, cicada killers are actually beneficial because they help control cicada populations. Most of the time, they don’t require treatment unless their nesting activity is creating a problem or they’re establishing themselves in high-traffic areas.

If you’re not sure whether you’ve found a cicada killer or another stinging insect, send us a photo. We’d rather help you identify it than have you worry unnecessarily.
