❄️ Cold Weather & Your Septic System: What Happens to the Bacteria?
A Quick PSA from Reddell Septic LLC ❄️

Here’s the inside scoop nobody asked for but everybody needs: when the temperatures drop, the good bacteria in your septic system slow down… way down.
We’re talking “Monday morning after a long weekend” slow.

Those bacteria are the crew that breaks down waste and keeps your tank doing its job. But in cold weather?

• Their metabolism tanks
• Waste breaks down slower
• Solids build up faster
• Your system becomes more prone to backups

Basically, your septic bacteria go into winter hibernation mode while your household keeps right on using water like it’s July.

How to help your system during the cold months:
• Spread out laundry and showers so you don’t shock the system with cold water overload
• Fix drippy faucets and running toilets—constant cold trickles = unhappy bacteria
• Don’t pour grease down the drain (cold weather turns grease into concrete)
• Stay on top of routine maintenance so your system isn’t fighting against buildup

Winter puts your septic system to the test, but a few smart habits keep those bacteria working—even if they’re moving a little slow this time of year.

If you’ve got questions or need help, Reddell Septic LLC is here for you all winter long.

❄️ Winter Has Arrived… and Your Septic System Is Pulling Double Shifts ❄️

Cold weather means your system is working harder than usual, and a little extra attention now can prevent a whole lot of trouble later. Here are a few smart winter tips to keep things running like they should (and avoid any “surprises” nobody wants):

• Insulate exposed pipes.
If you wouldn’t leave your water lines shivering, your septic pipes don’t want to either.

• Fix dripping faucets and running toilets.
Even tiny trickles can freeze and cause big problems—kind of like how one “quick errand” becomes a whole afternoon.

• Spread out laundry and showers.
Your system likes steady flow, not a tidal wave of cold water all at once.

• Know where your lids are before everything freezes.
Because digging through ice to find them is a special kind of winter misery.

For Aerobic/Aeration Systems:

• Clean or replace filters on schedule.
• Keep chlorine tablets stocked and stored dry.
• Protect spray heads so they’re not cracking in the cold.
• Watch for pooling water—frozen standing water is no one’s friend.

A few simple steps now keep your system happy, healthy, and far less likely to ruin your winter with a surprise service call.

🏡 Homeowner vs. Maintenance Provider 🏡

Knowing who handles what keeps your system safe and warranties intact.
✅ Homeowner: add chlorine, silence alarm, call for service.
⚠️ Provider: inspections, repairs, part replacement.
Don’t let unlicensed work turn into expensive damage.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters ⚙️

It’s more than adding chlorine — your 4-month service checks:
🔹 Air pump & filters
🔹 Sludge levels
🔹 Sprinkler operation
🔹 Electrical components
Routine maintenance keeps your system compliant, efficient, and problem-free.

🦟 Stop Mosquitoes Before They Move In 🦟

Your aerobic system shouldn’t double as a mosquito resort!
✅ Keep lids tight and sealed
✅ Fix leaks or overspray fast
✅ Maintain spray heads and irrigation zones
Standing water = mosquitoes, odors, and unhappy neighbors.

💧 What NOT to Flush 💧

Your aerobic system isn’t a trash can! Keep it healthy by sticking to the basics.
🚫 Don’t flush: wipes (even “flushable”), paper towels, feminine products, meds, cat litter, or grease.
✅ Only flush: wastewater and toilet paper.
Every “oops” down the drain costs you later!

❄️ Prep Your Aerobic Septic System for Winter ❄️

Cold weather can sneak up fast — and your system needs a little TLC to handle it.

✅ Do This:
• Keep lids & risers sealed tight to block freezing air
• Add insulation (mulch, straw, or leaves) over shallow lines
• Fix leaks now — excess water can freeze and cause backups
• Keep the system powered on (never shut it off for winter)
• Schedule a maintenance check before freezing temps hit

🚫 Don’t:
• Park or drive over the drain field — compacted soil = frozen lines
• Ignore alarms or slow drains — they’ll get worse in cold weather

Protect your system now so it keeps running all winter long!

🚽 Leaky Toilet = Big Trouble for Your Septic System 🚽

A constant leak floods your aerobic septic system:
💧 Dilutes the bacteria that break down waste
💧 Saturates the drain field, causing backups
💧 Pushes solids into the drain field, leading to clogs and root problems
💧 Risks sewage leaks and environmental contamination

✅ Fix leaks fast to save water, protect your home, and extend your system’s life.

🌱 Roots vs. Septic Systems 🌱

Tree and shrub roots LOVE septic systems — but they can wreck them. Roots sneak into cracks, pipes, and lids, causing blockages, backups, and even total system failure.

🚨 Warning Signs:
• Slow drains & gurgling pipes
• Soggy spots or bright green patches in the yard
• Bad odors near the system
• Frequent backups

🛑 Prevention Tips:
• Don’t plant trees or deep-rooted shrubs near your system
• Stick to grass or shallow-rooted plants
• Pump & inspect your tank regularly to catch feeder roots early

👉 If you suspect root problems, call a septic pro before small roots turn into big repairs.
