This rot happend when water was able to find its way behind the siding. The white trim wasnt tucked behind the cap at the top. Another factor is the installer did not use housewrap/vapor barrier.
All fixed now. No more leaking. Rebuilt the chimney. Repaired the roof. Added housewrap. Re installed the siding.
