Many people are promoted or recruited into leadership positions without understanding the fundamental philosophy of leadership:

It’s all about people.

When you are a leader, you are no longer responsible for doing the job; you are now responsible for inspiring, coaching, mentoring and motivating your team to become the very best version of themselves, which will help them produce their very best work.

One must remember that the talents that make a person successful in a previous, non-leadership role are rarely the same ones that will make them excel as leaders. This is why we have many companies grossly over-managed and severely under-led. When a leader can inspire and empower their team to become the very best version of themselves by challenging their assumptions of what they can accomplish, they can now empower their team to believe in the impossible and produce unimaginable results to the astonishment of many.

Great leaders build great teams with the expertise to help the organization achieve its vision and, in the process, fulfilled its purpose. In addition, these leaders have the wisdom to give their team the freedom to produce great work because it makes no sense to recruit the best and micromanage their work.

It's counterproductive; it will affect your team's morale and, in the process, create a very dysfunctional place to work. When you have a great group of passionate, inspired, and motivated people eager to make a difference, give them the freedom to work, and create an environment that allows them to become the very best version of themselves.

When leaders recognize that they don't have to be the smartest person in the room, these are the companies that consistently pull off innovative or heroic feats in business because so many of the people who work there are given the freedom to make it happen.

Your position on the org chart doesn’t make you a leader. Your title doesn’t make you a leader. Leadership has nothing to do with your social status, your bank account, or where you reside. It’s all about one life inspiring and motivating another to become the very best version of themselves.

Leadership has precious little to do with authority, management acumen, or even being in charge. Leadership is all about people inspiring people to believe that the impossible is possible; developing and building confidence in people to perform at heights they never imagine.

As John Quincy Adams puts it, “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
