That green pool didn't happen overnight. Hard water and off-balance chemistry slowly bake stains into your tile and plaster until they're tough to remove.

The fix is prevention. Test and balance your calcium, pH, and alkalinity on a regular schedule. Brush the waterline and tile every week. And treat any buildup early, before it hardens and needs a professional touch.

A test strip won't give you an exact number. That's not what it's for.

A strip like the AquaChek 4-in-1 reads what we call the Big Four: pH, alkalinity, free chlorine, and stabilizer. It's directional. It tells you which way your water is heading so you know what to do next. The exact reading depends on how well you can see color, so if you need precision, use a DPD test kit or bring a sample to your local pool store for a full analysis.

Two habits that make your strips worth trusting:

1. Write the date on the bottle when you open it. Strips go bad, and a bad strip is worse than no strip.
2. Test your own tap water first. Ours came back with pH around 8.2, chlorine at 0.5, alkalinity near 140, and stabilizer around 50.

That's the foundation every fill and top-off starts from. If you don't know your tap water, you don't know your starting point.

The technique itself is simple: dip the strip to the bottom, pull it out, tap it once, and read.
