Our Story
Our story began back in 1989 when we were installing our own pool at our campground on Verona Island, The Flying Dutchman Campground. The timing of this coincided with a small local pool supply store deciding to close it’s doors. While we were young and ambitious this seems like the perfect combination of businesses. We started small, with only the 3 of us and operated the Flying Dutchman Pools out of the campground location. It soon became evident that we needed more space and time to devote to the pool business. In 1996 we built a new store at our present location on Route 1 and renamed the business Island Pool & Spa.
Sadly in 1998 Johannes Honders died suddenly in an accident. My son Hans and I continued to maintain the business. Today we are proud to say we have grown the business to over 13 employees and provide pool and spa sales and service to the greater Bangor and Coastal Maine areas.
