One of the most common questions we get…why does my lawn have chinch bugs?

Here’s the truth: Chinch bugs aren’t a sign that you’re a bad homeowner.

These tiny insects love Florida’s heat and are especially attracted to St. Augustine grass. Even healthy, well maintained lawns can develop chinch bug activity during hot, dry conditions.

Factors that increase the risk:
• Heat and drought stress
• Thick thatch layers
• Inconsistent watering
• Existing lawn stress
• Nearby infestations

The best defense is a healthy lawn, proper irrigation, and regular monitoring for early signs of activity.

If you notice yellow or brown patches that continue spreading despite watering, don’t wait. Chinch bug damage can move quickly during the summer months.

Because catching the problem early is always easier than replacing the lawn later…if you suspect you have a problem give us a call today!

Are you seeing brown marks or tracks across your lawn? It may be heat tracking.

Heat tracking happens when stressed grass cannot recover from the pressure and heat created by mower tires, equipment or heavy foot traffic.

This time of year, lawns across Florida start showing stress from extreme heat, dry conditions, and improper watering. When turf gets too dry, the weight and heat from mower tires can leave visible tracks, flattened grass, and brown stressed areas behind.

A few things that commonly make it worse:
• Mowing during the hottest part of the day
• Dull mower blades tearing the grass
• Cutting the lawn too short
• Compacted or dry soil
• Repeated mowing in the same direction
• Watering too lightly

Proper watering is one of the biggest factors in preventing heat stress. Your lawn needs deep, consistent watering to encourage deeper root growth. Quick daily watering can actually create shallow roots and make turf struggle faster in the heat.

For St. Augustine lawns, watering early in the morning is best, the cycles should be finished before the sun comes up. You want enough water to soak into the soil, not just wet the surface. Afternoon rain does not always mean your lawn received enough coverage everywhere, especially during hot windy days.

If your lawn feels crunchy, footprints stay visible after walking through it, or mower tracks linger long after mowing, your turf is telling you it’s stressed.

The good news is many lawns can recover with proper irrigation, mowing practices, and ongoing maintenance.

Your lawn isn’t the only thing getting stronger this season. Our team is too!!

Today our techs were out training on proper core aeration techniques, soil compaction identification, lawn recovery expectations, irrigation awareness, and how to properly evaluate whether a lawn actually NEEDS aeration.

Because not every lawn should be aerated.
And that’s the difference.

Aeration helps:
• Relieve compacted soil
• Improve oxygen flow to the roots
• Increase water pe*******on
• Help fertilizer work more effectively
• Encourage stronger, healthier turf over time

But timing, soil conditions, irrigation, mowing practices, and lawn type all matter. That’s why we train our team to evaluate the lawn first instead of just selling a service.

If your lawn feels hard, stays soggy, struggles to grow, has thinning areas, or gets heavy foot traffic, it may be a good candidate.

Give us a call to schedule an inspection to see if aeration is right for your lawn! 772-766-0622

In May, your lawn is basically deciding what kind of summer it’s going to have...Strong, thick, healthy turf? Or stressed out and fighting for survival by August?

Right now is one of the most important transition periods of the year in South Florida:

• Heat is increasing
• Insect pressure is building
• Fertilizer blackout starts June 1

What you do now matters later...

A healthy lawn is not luck. It’s consistency, timing, irrigation, mowing practices, and proper treatments throughout the year.

And remember — fertilizer blackout begins June 1, which means there is limited time left for granular applications before the summer restriction period begins.

If you have not gotten on the schedule or called for an inspection yet, you better do it now. Spots are filling up and time is running out before the blackout starts.

🦠 Hantavirus Facts Without the Fear

There has been a lot of misinformation circulating online about hantavirus, so here are the actual facts:

Hantavirus is rare in the United States and is primarily spread through exposure to infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. The biggest risk comes from disturbing dried droppings or nesting material and breathing in contaminated dust particles.

This is not something that spreads casually from person to person like the flu or a cold in the U.S.

Common situations where exposure can happen:
• Cleaning out sheds, garages, barns, attics, or storage units with rodent activity
• Sweeping or vacuuming dried rodent droppings
• Handling rodent nests without protection

What you SHOULD do:
✔ Ventilate enclosed spaces before cleaning
✔ Wear gloves when cleaning rodent droppings
✔ Spray droppings with disinfectant before wiping them up
✔ Use paper towels instead of sweeping or vacuuming dry debris
✔ Seal up openings around the home to help prevent rodent entry

What you SHOULD NOT do:
❌ Panic because of social media posts
❌ Assume every mouse automatically means hantavirus
❌ Sweep or blow around dried droppings without precautions

Good sanitation and rodent prevention go a long way. The internet loves fear, but facts matter more.

Current situation on the hantavirus outbreak that was reported May 2, 2026.

In the coming months, brown areas in a St. Augustine lawn don’t always mean chinch bugs. Sometimes it’s irrigation. Sometimes it’s both.

Chinch bugs thrive in hot, dry areas and irrigation problems can make the damage look even worse.

Lawns that are underwatered, overwatered, or have poor coverage become stressed fast, especially going into summer heat.

A few things we commonly see:
• Dry spots from broken or misaligned heads
• Improper watering
• Uneven coverage creating stressed turf
• Chinch bug damage mistaken for fungus or drought stress

The most important part of landscape and turf management is the water!

Healthy lawns start with proper watering, proper mowing, and proper pest management working together.

If your lawn is thinning, browning, or not recovering, it may be time to have both the irrigation and turf inspected before the damage spreads.

Call us today to schedule an inspection of your lawn!
