C&L Friends and family. These are PRIME conditions for flooding. With the temperatures on the rise in the next week, it is crucial to check your sump pump to ensure it can handle the increased water levels and prevent potential damage. Water has nowhere else to go and your basement will flood. Most homes I’ve entered with basement issues never lost power. Remember, sump pumps are only designed to last 3-5 years. Here are some key points to consider:
• Listen for unusual sounds: A healthy sump pump has a steady, consistent hum. Any grinding, rattling, or clanking noises may indicate worn bearings or a damaged impeller.
• Inspect the float mechanism: The float switch detects rising water levels, If the float is stuck or the switch is faulty, the pump may not activate when needed.
• Check the discharge pipe: Ensure the discharge pipe is not blocked by ice or debris, and that it directs water away from your foundation.
• Test the pump function: Pour water into the sump pit to see if the pump activates and drains properly.
• Invest in a battery backup: The best part of a battery backup is the alarm. It is a small investment to avert a huge catastrophe.
