These photos are from a project we recently looked at after another company completed the work.
I’m not sharing them to embarrass anyone or criticize another business. Every contractor can make mistakes. I’m sharing them because homeowners deserve to know what to look for before hiring someone to seal their pavers.
A proper paver restoration is much more than simply applying sealer.
Before any sealer goes down, the surface should be properly prepared. Depending on the condition of the pavers, that may include:
* Removing weeds and vegetation from the joints.
* Correcting rust, organic growth, and other stains.
* Addressing efflorescence when present.
* Installing joint sand to the proper depth before sealing.
* Protecting surrounding surfaces from overspray.
* Cleaning edges, drains, coping, and transitions thoroughly.
In these photos you can see examples of items homeowners should watch for:
• Weeds sealed into the joints.
• Rust stains left untreated.
• Areas that appear to have been sealed over without proper preparation.
• Overspray on aluminum and screen enclosure components.
• Excessive or inconsistent joint sand.
• Missed detailing around edges and drains.
None of these issues are caused by the sealer itself—they’re preparation issues.
The quality of a paver sealing project is determined long before the first coat of sealer is applied.
If you’re getting estimates, don’t just compare prices.
Ask questions.
Ask what products they use.
Ask what preparation steps are included.
Ask how they’ll handle stains, weeds, efflorescence, and joint sand.
Ask how they’ll protect your home during the process.
An educated homeowner makes better decisions, and that benefits the entire industry.
