What is an emergency?

This week it was 10 gallons of gasoline poured onto a parking lot 45' away from a stormwater swale. The implications could be catastrophic if the fuel made it to the swale.

From the moment the notice came, to Kyle onsite with a vacuum truck protecting the swale, 49 minutes. The support truck was onsite in 57 minutes.

When it matters, we are here. Our average response time to a spill is 45 minutes. That is personal onsite working on containment and then cleaning.

Is this inexpensive, no. However, digging the containment out of the swale is 5 fold the cost.

How do we pull off this response time? Seven vacuum trucks and a team second to none.

Columbia Drain Co, the leader in stormwater management. With that said, what does it really mean? It means we handle everything.

Today's project. We have a stormwater lift station that is a triplex system, this simply means three pumps. Pump number two was not working. We arrived to pull the pump and we found the lift chain was not there.???????

Well down we go. 26' down. We found someone was there ahead of us. A piece of chain with stretched links, broken 1" bolts.

We attempted to lift the pump. It wanted to stay in the hole. We not understand why we found broken pieces. After putting 3000 pounds of lift force on the pump and the pump not moving, we chose to regroup.

Trip number three, we removed the guild rail bracket from the pump. Free at last! After coming out of the hole we finally brought up the 1000 # pump.

We this an easy process? Of course not, but walking away was never an option.

We will get a new pump ordered and installed.

Lift station structures are often overlooked in stormwater BPM's, until they fail.

We start every day with one focus, keeping our waterways clean. This means more than just rivers and streams. Ground water is rarely spoken about.

One of our excavation partners dug out a lot in Portland that use to have an underground heat oil tank. Typical 200 gallons. The tank leaked and spread throughout the lot.

While waiting for his environmental inspection, our PNW weather showed and filled his excavation with water.

Our team showed up with two vacuum trucks and the support team. All the oily water was removed and properly disposed of.

Sewer cameras, ultimate tool, or a waste on money.

As with every tool, it has it's place. Unfortunately, lately we have seen companies pushing cameras as the first step. We absolutely disagree with this theory.

Imagine if you will, we have just had three straight days of ran. You head to the Columbia River and put your head in the water, eyes wide open. What do you see? Nothing! The water is too dirty.

The exact same problem if you put a cameras into a plugged sewer. The dirty water, waste and paper will cover the lens and and you simply can't get a good picture.

What do we do differently at Columbia Drain Company? We clear the blockage. Based on what we see and feel, we will decide if the extra cost for a camera service is warranted.

Yes, a picture is worth a 1000 words. But in the world of sewer service, the sewer camera may not be the first tool to take off the truck.
