As a duct line fills with lint and the airflow gets reduced, this is what often happens. Lint begins to accumulate in the dryer itself, getting on the electrical components and close to the heating element, which can lead to a fire. This customer was fortunate that the fire went out quickly!

This duct line is only about 6 feet long, but the vent cover had a screen on it, which it should not have, that was covered with lint and stopping the flow of air and moisture from the dryer. That lead to about a gallon or more of standing water in the vent!

The lint in this dryer vent likely represents about 20 years of build up. The customer had reached the point where she simply could not get her clothes to dry in a reasonable amount of time. After the cleaning her dryer was restored to normal function and a significant fire hazard was removed!

Hmm.. I wonder if that’s why the dryer wasn’t working ? 🙂

When clothes aren’t drying as quickly as they should, the first steps should always be to check the airflow and make sure flex/transition duct behind the dryer is not crushed. Don’t assume it’s a problem with the dryer itself. All too often it’s a simple matter of lint buildup that can be taken care of quite easily with a dryer vent cleaning!

This is what can happen when birds get into your dryer vent, which can be solved with a proper bird guard. The nesting material completely cut off the airflow and the moisture the dryer was trying to pump out got trapped in the duct line. By the time I was finished, I probably got about a gallon of water out of this dryer vent!
