On this date in U.S. Army SF history......01 May 1963 – The 6th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was activated.

The 6th SFG’s area of responsibility included Southwest Asia and Southeast Asia, where it played a significant role in early U.S. special operations during the Vietnam era. The 6th SFG was deactivated in 1972.

Many of the original Son Tay raid volunteers were drawn from the 6th SFG, highlighting its operational significance. The group also contributed to shaping U.S. special operations doctrine in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia
