Memorial Day is a time to pause and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Today we honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.

As many families gather with friends and loved ones this weekend, we hope you’re able to spend time together, reflect, and enjoy the start of summer safely.

From all of us at Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions, we thank those who served and remember those who gave everything.

Wishing our community a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Bat maternity season is almost here.

In Iowa, bats begin having their pups in early summer, and June marks the start of bat maternity season. During this time, the young cannot yet fly. Because of that, state guidelines prohibit bat exclusion until the pups are able to leave the roost on their own.

If bats are already living in an attic or wall space when maternity season begins, homeowners may have to wait several weeks before the issue can be resolved.

That’s why spring is an important time to address bat activity.

If you’ve noticed any of the following signs around your home:
• Scratching or squeaking sounds in the attic
• Dark, oily marks around rooflines or vents
• Droppings (bat guano) near entry points

Now is a good time to have it checked.

Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions provides safe, humane bat exclusion that protects both your home and the bats themselves. Acting before maternity season begins can make the process much simpler.

Pest of the Month: Voles

If you’re seeing narrow surface runways through your grass or plants that look chewed at the base, voles may be the culprit.

Voles are small rodents that travel through shallow pathways in lawns and gardens. Unlike moles, which hunt insects underground, voles feed on roots, bulbs, and vegetation.

Their damage can sometimes be confused with mole activity, but the solution is very different.

Understanding which animal is causing the problem is the first step toward solving it.

If your lawn or garden is showing signs of vole damage this spring, Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions can help identify the issue and recommend the best way to manage it.

Spring is here, and so are some of Iowa’s busiest moms. This Mother’s Day, we’re giving a little nod to all the moms both inside your home and out.

This time of year, we start seeing more wildlife activity around homes. Raccoon mothers look for quiet places like attics or chimneys to raise their babies. Squirrels settle into attics and soffits, and birds sometimes choose unexpected spots like outdoor light fixtures.
They’re not trying to cause trouble. They’re just doing what moms do - looking for a safe place for their young.

But when that place ends up being part of your home, it can lead to noise, damage, and a mess you weren’t planning for. If you’re hearing scratching in the attic, noticing nesting materials, or seeing animals coming and going from the same spot, it may be time to take a closer look. At Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions, we specialize in safe, humane wildlife removal and prevention. We’ll walk you through what’s happening and help you protect your home while handling wildlife responsibly.
If you think animals may be nesting in or around your home, give us a call at 515-218-3400. We’re happy to help.

You may have heard of “Low-Mow May.”
The idea is simple: letting lawns grow a little longer early in the season can help pollinators like bees and butterflies that rely on early flowers for food. Supporting pollinators is a great thing for our environment.
But it doesn’t mean letting pest problems develop around your home.

As temperatures rise, insects like mosquitoes, ants, and other nuisance pests also become more active. The goal is finding a balance between helping beneficial insects and preventing pests from moving into your yard or home.
A few simple steps can help:
• Mow at a slightly higher setting so pollinators still have habitat while keeping the lawn maintained
• Keep brush piles and yard debris away from walls, doors, and foundations
• Check for and remove standing water to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding

At Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions, we focus on practical pest management that protects your home while remaining mindful of the environment.

If you’re starting to notice ants, mosquitoes, or other pests as spring turns into summer, we’re happy to help identify what’s going on and recommend targeted solutions so you can enjoy your yard. 📲 515-218-3400

Today is Bat Appreciation Day.

Bats are one of nature’s most helpful animals. A single bat can eat thousands of insects in a single night, making bats an important part of our ecosystem.
In Iowa, bats are also a protected species. That means they cannot be harmed or removed in ways that would endanger them, especially during the time when mother bats are raising their young.

At Bats and Bugs Pest Solutions, we believe in handling bat situations the right way. We provide safe and humane bat exclusion, which means we help bats leave structures without harming them and prevent them from returning. We also follow seasonal guidelines and do not perform exclusions when young bats are present and unable to survive on their own.

If you’re curious about how bat exclusion works or what to do if you suspect bats in your attic, we recently published a blog that explains the process and what homeowners should know. If you think bats may be in your home, give us a call at 515-218-3400. We’re happy to help you understand your options and handle the situation responsibly.
