Ceramic coatings were released to the market in 2010. The two main ceramic coating pioneers were Carpro cQuartz and Optimum Opti Coat. During that time, it was my second year learning about the industry and I was just starting out my first year at the auto body shop. Having the opportunity to watch a product grow from it's beginning stage to how far it has progressed is like watching myself grow in this industry. It had its ups by carving out a whole entire market for detailers to use and offer to customers. It had its downs by allowing any individual to gain access to it and proclaim they are a ceramic coating installer.

Its been over a decade since the introduction to ceramic coatings. Why are we still seeing improper installation of ceramic coatings on cars till this very day? There's a couple reasons I believe in. But the main deep seated root issue is greed. Everyone wants to make alot of money very fast these days. But that's not how it works. There's a required set amount of time and hours you have to put in, in order to learn a skill. If you try to short cut it, you will produce bad quality work. Repetition is how you improve your skillsets. Have some self respect, and self pride. That goes a long way.

Making mistakes is how we all grow as individuals. It's part of the growing process that can't be short cutted or avoided. No matter how hard we try to plan ahead, something will and can go wrong. There's no shame in making a obvious preventable mistake, only as long as you don't make the same mistake twice. I remember back when i was still working at the body shop, i made alot of mistakes no one would even imagine. There was one time i was in the car with no power and we had to push it in neutral into a empty stall. I forgot the brakes dont kick in as fast and slammed on it too late. The rear end of the car hit against the wall and my boss told me to get the f**k out the car. The customer used a green kitchen sponge and caused alot of deep scratches on the paint by accident. I used 2000 and 3000 grit to improve it. He was happy with the outcome and learned a valuable lesson.

I woke up at 6am and drove 2 hours round trip for my first auto detailing job at Age 19.

When something gives you an opportunity, you gotta take it, don't complain, and go for it. My boss asked me how much I wanted to be paid hourly. Back in 2009, I believe the minimum wage in San Francisco county was either $9 or $10 per hour. So I told him I'm happy with $10 an hr for compensation. This job required me to wake up at 6am and drive 1 hr to be on time at 7am.
I was content with $10 an hour. Not alot of people would of taken this job with the circumstances attached to it. Who wants to wake up and get out of bed 6am in the morning when they can just get a job that starts at 8am or 9am, so you can get in an extra 1-2hrs of sleep. Who wants to drive 2 hours round trip when gas was expensive at $4 something per gallon. Who wants to spend 3 gallons of gas each day to go to work, especially when that is more than 1 hour worth of your daily wage. Realistically, this job I took upon was not worth the $10 per hour. But to me personally, I didn't care about all that. All i knew was, at the age of 19, I was passionate about detailing and learning how to run a business, and someone actually gave me an opportunity.

When you're young and dumb, you still know the difference between what's right and what's wrong. Someone backed into the customer's car, and just took off without leaving a note. I remember my first big mistake I made working at the auto body shop during my 3 month probation period. No one intentionally wants to make a mistake. When i was still in school, before I dropped out of college to work, we are penalized for our mistakes. That trained us to be scared of making mistakes. But once you get out there in the real world, the only way to ascend to make progress and grow is by using your mistakes as stepping stones. That very second I became aware of the mistake I made, my heart sank, your mind goes blank, and you're nervous about the consequences.

There's only two options you can choose to make from there. Option 1, stay silent and try to fix the problem yourself. Option 2, take a deep breath, and sum up the courage and walk into your boss's office, and tell them straight up that you made a mistake. It's very hard to acknowledge that you f**ked up. I've seen grown men scared to speak up. When something as important as your job is on the line, you don't want to lose it. I understood that at a young age, and I couldn't move forward until I got it off my chest.

Working on this 2009 Honda civic Si brought me back to the old days when I was a young man and got my first car back in 2008. I was hella excited and joined a car forum. I saw all these f**king sick car builds, and wondered if I can aspire to have something like that one day. Back then aftermarket carbon fiber parts was a popular trend. The two main brands were VIS and Seibon. So I'm looking at this hood right in front of me, and it just flashed back so many memories when I was young and carefree.

One thing i learned about these aftermarket carbon fiber parts was that the clearcoat will quickly oxidize and just look like trash if left unprotected. Back then the only options to protect it as to either bring it to a auto body shop and have them reclear it or paint protection film. Both options were expensive, but now with ceramic coatings, there's a more budget friendly option, that's also quick and convenient. If money wasn't an issue, I would recommend going straight to paint protection film, then ceramic coat on top of the film.

One of the main reasons why i decided to work for someone else for 7 years before i started my own business was because i lacked business experience, knowledge, and hands on experience. Learning from the detailing forums provided alot of value and information. I learned that a perfect scenario where every single individual panel have not been repainted would be our ideal work situation. But in reality, we will come across a high percentage of cars that had some panels repainted before.

I wanted to learn and understand the aftermarket repainting industry. I seeked out people to teach me what are the steps of doing it the right way, and what happens if the process is short cutted. I took an interest in it because i knew down the road when i move on with my own business, i needed to be knowledgeable to understand how to approach repainted panels during the polishing phase of detailing.

Repainted panels can be complex depending on if fast clear or slow clear was used to repaint a panel. Overtime, i understood how both behaves and how to properly correct the paint without being unprepared.

The past 38 days was the busiest work load Ive endured for this year. Out of those 38 days, i was only able to take 2 days off. Whether you're busy or have no business at all, there's one thing you will go through no matter what.

Stress, headaches, and problems. Reflecting back to when i was part time and didn't know how to properly run a business yet, which explained why i didn't get much customers. Everyday my head would hurt due to the stress of having no income and no work. Now that my business is established and business is stable, I'm still going through the exact same problems right now.

Working long hours every day causes physical stress to the body, focusing on the task to meet deadlines causes mental stress, being bombarded by messages also causes stress to reply promptly. The one thing i always ground myself with is perspective. when business is slow, there are problems, when business is good there will still be problems. No matter what you will come across problems.

Glass coatings were always one of those products that had trouble performing and holding up over time when they were initially introduced to the market. The application fail rate was extremely high compared to ceramic coatings for paintwork. In some cases, during the initial process of applying onto the glass, it would flash immediately like alcohol.

Gtechniq G1 was released in 2012. Ive tried alot of different brands for glass coatings hoping to find one that can hold up to at least over 1 year with a easy on, easy off application process. Till this day, I have not found a brand yet that can outlast Gtechniq G1. 1 coat for all glass except front windshield will last a bare minimum of 1 year easily. The front windshield requires 3 coats with a 5 minute window in between each coat.

Due to the friction from the front windshield wiper blades, it requires a glass coating that can take the abuse. If you guys can see, once you apply the glass coating, you can see it haze and set up to dry. Once it's dried, use the G2 to buff off the film left onto the glass. It's a straight forward 2 step system that works.

I believe to this day, there's still a misconception of which is a more superior installation in terms of a pre cut kit or bulk install. I learned with old school 3m crap when the film would yellow so bad within a short amount of time, and adhesive was a joke. Now with the new generation film that includes clearer optics, self healing capabilities, user friendly adhesive backing, and in general less pain in the ass to relift and retack.

Every ppf brand improved their product line. In addition, some new companies came into the market with some awesome stuff such as carbon fiber ppf, and gloss black ppf. If you were to ask me 5-10 yrs ago would i choose pre cut or custom bulk install, i would say hands down bulk. Fast forward to now with better DAP program options, newer plotters, there's not a big gap between both options now.

I personally learned by installing pre cut kits first. Naturally that would be the way to go to get a feel for things and avoid using the blade to cut off excess film,
and you don't need to figure out where to make relief cuts. Currently, I use both methods depending on different makes and models. Sometimes the pre cut has a more superior fitment, and sometimes bulk is the way to go.
