A honey bee swarm on the ground (instead of neatly clustered on a tree branch) is often a sign of trouble, though not always fatal. Normal swarms temporarily cluster on branches, fences, or structures while scout bees search for a new home. They prefer elevated spots for safety from predators and better takeoff. A fall to the ground usually indicates a problem with the queen or external factors.
