When most people think about mosquito control, they picture a fogger or mist blower. But spraying adult mosquitoes should be one of the later steps—not the first.
Fogging may kill mosquitoes, but it can also affect beneficial insects and pollinators, including bees and butterflies.
A more thoughtful mosquito-control strategy starts at the source:
💧 1. Eliminate breeding sites
Remove standing water wherever possible. Check buckets, flowerpot saucers, toys, gutters, birdbaths, and other areas where water can collect.
🦟 2. Target mosquitoes before they become adults
For standing water that can’t be removed, an appropriate larvicide can help control mosquito larvae before they mature.
🪤 3. Consider mosquito traps
Some traps attract adult mosquitoes, while others are designed to lure female mosquitoes to lay their eggs inside the trap, interrupting the breeding cycle.
🌿 4. If adult mosquito treatment is necessary, spray thoughtfully
A compressed-air sprayer can allow for more targeted application and may create less pesticide drift than broad misting or fogging equipment. Botanical-oil-based products may also be an option in some situations.
🐝 HELP PROTECT POLLINATORS
When mosquito treatments are necessary:
• Avoid spraying blooming plants where bees and butterflies may be feeding.
• Schedule treatments when pollinators are less active.
• Remove children’s toys, pet food, and water dishes from treatment areas.
• Always follow the pesticide label for application instructions and required reentry times.
Effective mosquito control isn’t simply about spraying more—it’s about targeting the mosquito life cycle while reducing unnecessary pesticide exposure.
