Week 2: Clean Your Dryer Vent

Lint buildup in dryer vents is one of the leading causes of residential fires. Lint is highly flammable, and clogged vents can cause heat to build up and start a fire.

Red flags your dryer vent may be clogged:
• Clothes take longer than one cycle to dry
• Dryer feels very hot to the touch
• Burning smell while the dryer is running
• Excess lint behind the dryer
• Outside vent flap does not open when the dryer is running

Take a few minutes this week to:
• Clean the lint trap after every load
• Clean the dryer vent and exhaust pipe at least once a year
• Make sure the outside vent is clear of debris and animal nests
• Use rigid or semi-rigid metal vent hoses (avoid plastic or foil)

This week’s task: Clean your dryer vent. This simple task can help prevent a house fire.
