Why do the spots always come back in a few days?
Have you ever noticed the reappearance of spots and stains on carpets after they were cleaned using a traditional method of steam cleaning (shampooing)? Sometimes you can see these spots as soon as the carpet dries. Other times, the spots come back after several weeks have passed. Either way, it can be quite annoying to see stains reemerge on a carpet you thought was just professionally cleaned. You are not alone. The reappearance of stains can be caused by two factors:

1) Wicking. This happens when dirt penetrates the carpet below its fibers, reaching deep into the cushion (padding) or subfloor, like when a big drink is spilled and left unattended. To prevent spills from soaking deep into the carpet, try to treat them right away by blotting with absorbing towels. Shampooing the carpet doesn’t always help deal with such stains. Some companies will use a low-moisture cleaning method that will remove the surface stain while keeping the rest of the dirt underneath the carpet fibers. In some cases, the best solution is to clean the subfloor and replace the padding in the affected area.

2) Residue. Soiling occurs when residue from carpet-cleaning detergents is left behind on the carpet fibers. If not completely rinsed, the residue becomes sticky and attracts more dirt to the same spot, causing a stain to reappear.
