Teachable Tuesday: The more you know š keeping with our Halloween Theme.
A little girl in Seattle named Gabi began leaving food for the neighborhood crows. At first, they watched from the trees, cautious but curious. Over time, they learned that her yard was a safe place. Every morning, they came back, black feathers glinting in the light, waiting patiently for their meal.
Then one day, something changed. On the railing where she left the food, a small bead appeared. Then a button. A piece of glass. Even a tiny heart-shaped earring. The crows were leaving gifts in return.
Scientists call this āreciprocal behavior,ā a rare form of exchange between species. Crows are capable of gratitude, memory, and trust. They remember faces, they recognize kindness, and they know when a bond has been formed.
What started as a childās simple act of feeding turned into a quiet friendship. A reminder that even in the smallest moments, connection can cross the space between wings and hands.
