Before 1775, many cities were filled with an awful stench, and foul air was a constant threat to homes.

Then a Scottish watchmaker and inventor named Alexander Cu***ng patented a device that would eventually change the world.

In 1775, Cu***ng created the first flushing toilet with an S-trap. This was a simple but brilliant design with a bend in the pipe that held a plug of water after each flush. 🚽

This small amount of water created a seal, blocking dangerous and foul-smelling sewer gases from seeping back into the house.

Now, a flushing commode had actually been invented much earlier. Sir John Harington designed one for Queen Elizabeth I all the way back in 1596.

But Harington's version lacked a trap, so the problem of sewer gas remained. Cu***ng's innovation was the piece that truly made indoor toilets safe and practical.

This invention didn't change things overnight, as it took a long time for cities to build the needed plumbing infrastructure. Still, Cu***ng’s design was the foundation for the modern sanitation that we rely on today. 💡

His simple, life-saving S-trap principle is still used in toilets all over the world.
