Sharing because this a hot topic that needs to be discussed more often!

This is something I don’t think we talk about enough as house cleaners.

We walk into strangers homes every single day. A lot of us work completely alone, behind closed doors with people we barely know.

And unfortunately, not every situation is safe.

Another cleaner recently reached out to me after experiencing s*xual harassment from a client. I have her permission to share what happened, but I’m keeping everyone completely anonymous.

It started with an inappropriate s*xual comment while she was working. Then questions about her s*x life. And eventually, an inappropriate text that crossed the line yet again.

She finally said enough was enough.

She reported what happened and stood her ground, even though doing so meant losing three cleaning accounts.

Something she said really stuck with me:

“That amount of money is not worth it.”

And THAT is why we need to talk about this.

How many cleaners have laughed off an inappropriate comment because we didn’t know what else to do?

How many have felt uncomfortable in a home but finished the clean anyway because we needed the money?

Being hired to clean someone’s home does not give them permission to make s*xual comments, ask inappropriate questions, touch us, or make us feel unsafe.

I don’t care if you’re halfway through the house.

I don’t care if you desperately need that $150.

I don’t care if you’re scared they’ll leave a bad review.

If something feels wrong, LEAVE.

You do not need to wait for something worse to happen before you’re allowed to remove yourself from a situation.

Your safety is more important than finishing someone’s bathroom.

Your safety is more important than keeping a client.

Your safety is more important than the money.

We talk about pricing. We talk about products. We talk about nightmare cleans. We talk about growing our businesses.

But we need to talk about our safety too.

House cleaners, have you ever had a client cross a line or make you feel unsafe while you were working?

Because I really think it’s time we start talking about this.

Should cleaners start offering smaller cleaning services for clients who can’t afford whole-house cleaning?

I’ve been seeing this become more popular, especially as people are cutting expenses and reconsidering services they used to have regularly.

Instead of losing the client completely, some cleaners are offering smaller, specialized services at a lower total price.

For example:

Kitchen + bathrooms
Bathrooms + floors
Mini deep cleans
Bathroom-only cleans
Kitchen-only cleans
A la carte cleaning — the client chooses the areas they need the most help with

I even saw one cleaner offering kitchen, bathrooms, and floors for one set price instead of requiring a whole-house cleaning.

If someone can no longer afford a $175–$250 whole-house cleaning, would you rather offer them a smaller service for $125–$150 that takes less of your time or lose the client altogether and leave that spot open while waiting for someone who can afford your full service?

This DOESN’T mean discounting your work.

You’re not doing the same amount of work for less money. You’re reducing the scope of work to fit a smaller budget.

For cleaners who have openings in their schedules, something like a Mini Clean or A La Carte Clean could potentially fill those gaps.

But I know some cleaners feel differently and would rather keep their service whole-house only and wait for clients who can afford their regular pricing.

So I’m curious…

Would you offer smaller cleaning packages to adapt to what clients can afford right now, or would you stick with whole-house cleaning only and wait for the right clients?
