It just seems surreal that this Saturday, Water Works Pool & Spa will be 40 years old. I've been there since day one. I am incredibly proud - knowing where we started and seeing where we've taken it. For the past month, I've been thinking about those four decades and all the former employees who have come and gone; the customers who have come and gone; the funny stories of crazy things employees did and crazy things customers did. I can still picture four guys handing that pool slide up to Leo to put on the roof of the old store on McFarland - they strained, and he grabbed it and walked it to the top of the roof by himself. I've thought about news stories that broke live while we had time to watch TV in the early years - like seeing the Challenger explode, watching the OJ slow-speed chase, watching the Lorena Bobbitt trial and seeing Susan Smith's accusation dissolve into her own big lie. I've thought about the weeks in the early winters when my dad and I might go without a paycheck, and how he would be in disbelief to know how prosperous we've become since he died. I've thought about the day I had to be creative and go get (way before cell phones) Julie back to the store and then tell her to call home to find out her mother had just been killed by an 18-wheeler who ran a red light. I've thought about the time Drew and I were in York and the police stopped us from finishing a liner job because we didn't have a license to do business in that postage stamp of a town. I've thought about the Christmas parties - renting the party bus to go to B'ham so we could all see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert or the trip to Top Golf. And then there's the time the gal escaped from the Juvenile Detention Center behind us and clueless me was about to give her a ride home not knowing where she'd come from. Just so many crazy stories. But what a rewarding business to be in. When I hire someone new, I always ask them what Water Works sells. I let them say pool chemicals, hot tubs, cleaners etc... and then I correct them. I tell them no, we sell F-U-N. Plain and simple, we work our buns off so families can enjoy being with each other in their own backyards, whether in cool refreshing water, or hot bubbling water. Anyway, all that to say THANK YOU Tuscaloosa, Northport and the extended West Alabama towns and cities. You've been good to us and we appreciate you. Please come join us this Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Food, prizes and music by Sadie McClendon. Let's have a party!!!
