🐍 TWO RATTLESNAKES. ONE WILD ENCOUNTER! 😳

There's never a dull moment at Animal Experts!

In this video, our very own Colton encounters not one, but TWO rattlesnakes together during what appears to be mating activity. And judging by everyone's reactions, these snakes weren't exactly thrilled about being disturbed! 😅

🌵 A few fascinating rattlesnake facts:

🐍 Rattlesnake romance: In Southern Arizona, rattlesnake mating activity can occur during spring and late summer into fall, depending on the species and conditions.

🐍 Two snakes, one hiding spot: Rattlesnakes often seek sheltered areas beneath objects, rocks, and vegetation. Finding one doesn't necessarily mean it's alone!

🐍 They sense heat: Rattlesnakes are pit vipers, equipped with specialized heat-sensing organs that help them locate warm-blooded prey.

🐍 Not always a warning: Rattlesnakes don't always rattle before striking. Never assume a quiet snake is a safe snake.

🐍 Not every snake with desert coloring is a rattlesnake.

In one of our recent videos, John Truman introduces a large gopher snake — a species that people sometimes mistake for a rattlesnake because of its coloration and defensive behavior.

Gopher snakes can actually be beneficial neighbors. They help control rodents and may even prey on other snakes when the opportunity arises.

That does not mean we recommend handling an unfamiliar snake yourself. If you are not absolutely sure what species you are looking at, give it space and let someone with wildlife experience make the identification.

Living in Southern Arizona means learning which animals share the desert with us. The more we understand them, the easier it becomes to respond with caution instead of panic.

🐍 What should you do if you find a rattlesnake in your yard?

Start with distance.

Give the snake space, keep children and pets away, and do not try to grab, pin, sweep, or relocate it yourself. Rattlesnakes are part of life in the Sonoran Desert, but an animal in a high-traffic area can create a real safety concern.

What should you do if you suddenly find a wild animal on your property?

First: don’t assume you need to handle it yourself.

Different animals require different approaches, and location matters. A snake near the front door is a very different situation from a squirrel in the attic, a bat in the house, or signs that rodents have started nesting somewhere they shouldn’t.

When you call us, we’ll ask questions such as what kind of animal you believe it is, where it’s located or entering, whether damage has occurred, and whether you can safely send us a photo. That information helps us understand the situation and determine the appropriate next step.

🐍 Rattlesnake… or gopher snake?

In this video, John from Animal Experts introduces one of our desert neighbors that gets mistaken for a rattlesnake all the time: the gopher snake.

Their coloration can look pretty convincing, but one of the easiest clues is the tail. Gopher snakes have a long, tapered tail, while rattlesnakes end in a rattle—or a blunt tip if the rattle has been damaged.

And here’s the surprising part: gopher snakes can actually be beneficial to have around. They help control rodent populations and may even prey on other snakes.

A few more fun facts about gopher snakes:

🐍 They are nonvenomous and subdue prey by constriction.
🐍 When threatened, they may hiss loudly, flatten their heads, and vibrate their tails—behavior that can make them look even more like a rattlesnake.
🐍 They can grow quite large, with some adults reaching several feet in length.
🐍 Their diet commonly includes rodents, birds, eggs, and other small animals.

This particular snake wasn’t exactly welcomed around someone’s home—but after a safe relocation, he’ll be much more appreciated back out in the desert. 🌵
