As freezing temps are coming back into the forecast here are some things you need to know to keep you pool as safe as possible.

1. Make sure the water level is full up to the drain
2. Make sure to keep all skimmer baskets clean so water can pass through easily
3. If you see freezing around equipment contact us.

Extended duration freezes: round 2

Not since 2021 have we experienced a prolonged period of sub-freezing temperatures causing widespread damage to pool equipment. As we emerge from the latest Polar Vortex event that disrupted our unusually mild winter, we are reflecting on new lessons learned.
1. Water features, unless critical to the circulation system should be winterized. Waterfalls cause significant cooling and pools that did not winterize them were generally 5+ degrees cooler than pools that did. It’s the #2 contributing factor to frozen equipment. ( #1 being power loss)
2. Freeze Protection mode will NOT prevent equipment damage when the water temp is below 33. We all know water freezes at 32 degrees, but did you know that moving water can dip below 32? It’s known as supercooled water and the lower the temperature, the faster it transforms into ice once stationary. In pools with spas, the freeze protection program switches the valves from pool mode to spa mode and back every 30 minutes. That generally is enough to prevent the equipment from freezing in sub-freezing conditions UNTIL THE WATER temperature reaches 32. What we’ve found is water at 30 degrees will freeze fast enough in 30 minutes to lock up actuators, the motors that move the valves. It’s critical to winterize the system quickly if your water temperature drops below 33 degrees.
3. Covering the spa with black plastic helps, turning it into a mini solar heater.

Hooefully these tips are helpful to you so you avoid the unfortunate situation of frozen equipment.
