Real attic visitor from a job today.

Raccoons, squirrels, rats, and other wildlife can do a lot of damage once they find a way into an attic or roofline. If you’re hearing scratching, seeing droppings, or noticing gaps around vents, soffits, or roof edges, it’s worth getting checked before it gets worse.

Critter One offers free inspections, trapping when needed, and exclusion work to help keep critters from getting back inside. Full recommended scopes are backed by our 15-Month Total Home Protection Guarantee.

A trap alone usually does not solve an attic wildlife problem.

If rats, squirrels, raccoons, or other animals are getting into the attic, there is usually an opening somewhere around the roofline, soffit, vent, garage, or exterior of the home. If that entry point is not found and sealed properly, the problem can keep coming back.

Critter One of Houston offers free wildlife inspections. We’ll check the attic and exterior, show photos of what we find, and walk through options for removal, sealing, and prevention.

Houston homeowners can schedule a free inspection this week.

With all the recent attention around hantavirus, it’s a good reminder that rodent problems aren’t always just about the damage they cause.

What many homeowners don’t realize is that rodents can leave behind droppings, urine, and nesting material that may carry health risks—especially in attics, garages, and crawlspaces where activity often goes unnoticed.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to clean it up too quickly.

Sweeping or vacuuming droppings can actually disturb particles into the air and make the situation worse.

The better approach:

• identify where the activity is coming from
• remove the rodents
• clean and sanitize properly
• seal off how they got in

This article does a good job breaking down rodent-related disease risks and why proper cleanup matters:

While this My Turn column originally appeared in PMP last year, the recent spike in hantavirus news makes its safety protocols and insights all the more timely.

With all the rain today and better weather coming after, here’s something homeowners should keep an eye on over the next few days:

Heavy rain tends to push both pests and wildlife out of their normal hiding spots and closer to homes.

A few things worth checking:

• Rooflines and soffits for gaps or loose areas
• Attic noises (especially tonight and early morning)
• Ant activity around doors, windows, and foundations
• Standing water near the home (mosquitoes love it)
• Damaged vents or crawlspace openings

A lot of pest and wildlife issues start right after weather like this—not always immediately, but in the days that follow when things dry out.

Just something to keep an eye on.

One thing a lot of homeowners don’t realize: when babies are involved, the mother usually won’t leave easily.

This time of year, many wildlife issues involve nesting and young animals hidden in attics, walls, and crawlspaces.

When that happens, the mother becomes much more protective and persistent—often returning over and over if the issue isn’t handled correctly.

That’s why this time of year can be more complicated than just “getting the animal out.”

Proper removal means accounting for the babies, the mother, and how they got in—otherwise the problem often isn’t over.

Peek-a-boo…

This is usually what’s going on when homeowners start hearing something in the attic—especially after all the rain we just had.

When areas get flooded or disturbed, animals look for dry, protected spaces. Rooflines and attics are some of the easiest places for them to get into, especially if there’s already a small gap or weak spot.

Once they find a way in, they tend to keep using the same area—and that’s when a small issue can turn into something bigger pretty quickly.

Most of the calls we’re getting right now started exactly like this.

Hearing something in the attic? Here’s what to do:

• Don’t ignore it
• Don’t try to handle it yourself
• Pay attention to when you hear activity
• Look for signs around the outside of the home
• Make sure the entry point is identified and fixed

Most problems we see come back because that last step gets missed.
