Unlike most spiders, wolf spiders don’t build webs. They stalk their prey across the ground, hunting in garages, gardens, and grass.

Every night, they quietly keep the deadliest pests in check.

New genetic research reveals that bed bugs have been living alongside humans for about 60,000 years, making them one of our oldest companions and pests. Scientists compared the genomes of two lineages: one that feeds on humans and another that prefers bats. Their findings suggest that bed bugs likely switched from bats to early humans or Neanderthals when our ancestors began leaving caves. After the last Ice Age, while the bat-associated bugs dwindled, the human-loving bed bugs thrived, especially as people began forming large settlements in ancient Mesopotamia.

The study shows how bed bugs adapted perfectly to human environments, becoming our first true urban pest. Researchers even identified a gene mutation linked to insecticide resistance, explaining why bed bugs survived powerful pesticides like DDT. Understanding these evolutionary changes could help scientists predict how pests will spread in the future especially as modern cities grow. So while humans evolved, bed bugs evolved right along with us tiny survivors that refuse to move out.

Ladybug or Lookalike? How to Tell the Difference

At first glance, all red beetles with black spots may seem like the same friendly garden insect—but that’s not the case.
The beloved native ladybug is often confused with the invasive Asian lady beetle, a species that behaves very differently.
Here’s how you can spot the difference:
Asian Lady Beetle (The Lookalike)
Features a distinct black “M”-shaped mark on the light-colored area just behind the head.
Known to be aggressive and capable of biting.
Frequently invades homes, especially during fall when seeking shelter.
Releases a foul-smelling, yellowish fluid when disturbed.
Can cause digestive or health issues if accidentally ingested by pets.
Native Ladybug (The Garden Ally)
Lacks the “M” marking behind the head.
Harmless to humans—no biting or stinky defenses.
Feeds on aphids and other soft-bodied pests, making them a natural ally for gardeners.
Prefers to stay outdoors, helping to maintain a balanced ecosystem.
Why the Difference Matters
Asian lady beetles are more than just a nuisance.
Their tendency to invade homes, bite, and even pose risks to pets makes them an unwelcome guest.
In contrast, native ladybugs play a vital role in sustainable gardening, acting as one of nature’s best pest control agents.

Takeaway
Next time you see a small red beetle, take a closer look.
If it’s a true ladybug, welcome it as a partner in your garden.
If it’s an Asian lady beetle, be aware—it’s an intruder, not a helper.

Termites and ants share a number of similar physical characteristics, and it can be hard to distinguish between the two at first glance!

Since termites can be active long before they are properly identified, mistaking them for ants could be a costly error!

If you notice tiny flying insects around your house or dead in the windowsill, it’s important to determine if they are ant swarmers or termite swarmers.

‘Swarmers’ is a term many entomologists use for reproductive ants or termites. They have wings and typically fly together in large numbers. After they swarm, termites and ants shed their wings.

Termite ‘swarmers’ emerge only once per year, usually in the SPRING, and they are never alone. Usually there will be several hundred to a few thousand swarmers, all emerging simultaneously. But it is not the swarmers you need to worry about—it is the established termite colony from which they emerged. Termite colonies do not produce swarmers until they have been established for several years.

There are a few ways to tell these two insects apart:

Wings: A good way to tell the difference between the two is by examining the insect’s wings. Termites have front wings and hind wings that are the same length, and are twice as long as their body. Ants have shorter wings overall, and their front wings are longer than their hind wings.

Antennae: Termites have straight antennae, while ants have bent antennae.

Body: Termites have little to no visible waist, while ants have a narrow waist.

If you’re unsure about which insect has taken up residence in your home, it’s best to contact a professional exterminator. If you have termites, your exterminator will need to remove the pesky insects and determine if there is any structural damage to your home. An ant infestation is something you can typically treat on your own.

Although this week's image is funny (if you like dad jokes), but termites are really no laughing matter. It is estimated that termites cause over $5 billion in property damage annually. Worldwide, there are over 2,000 known termite species. Although termites don't target humans or pets, they do target your property and ultimately your pocketbook.

It's not entirely easy to identify termites. You may first notice the damage, or wings once the termites shed them. Spoiler alert... Not all termites have wings and not all flying ants are termites. Unlike other pests, termites can thrive all year long.

Your friends at ARAB Termite & Pest Control can assist you in early detection, prevention, and eradication of termites before they get to your pocketbook. Contact our professional team at 812-870-0992 or online at https://arab-terrehaute.com/
