”Crackdown” on storm chasing?

Marshall County commissioners (Kansas) signed a letter Tuesday that will be sent to state legislators, the Kansas attorney general and possibly other state officials to ask for creation of a task force for open dialogue on traffic hazards and other problems in the aftermath of last week‘s storm chasing in Kansas.

“This situation absolutely needs to be addressed before someone is seriously injured or killed. While we also understand there is not a quick or easy remedy to this issue, we must take proactive steps,” the letter said.

“Our goal is not to infringe upon the rights of storm chasers; rather, it is to reinforce that they do not have the right to disobey the laws and traffic regulations governing our highways and roads,” the letter said.

Sheriff Tim Ackerman called it “true arrogance that they could ignore all the laws and do whatever they wanted.”

He estimated it would have taken 20 to 30 minutes to get an ambulance through the “conga line” of several hundred cars that were storm chasing.

Ackerman said he drove for two miles on the wrong side of the road because people wouldn’t get over.
