How excessive rain can affect your pool!!

Rainwater is known to have acidic properties that can negatively affect your pool water chemistry balance. This can affect anything from the pH balance to alkalinity levels and more. The pH of rain across the US, which is all acid rain, is due to industrial gasses (i.e. NOx, SOx) which make nitric and sulfuric acid.

Aside from rainwater falling directly into your pool being a bad thing, something even worse can happen. When you have rainwater coming off your landscape or deck, you now have an added source of water to deal with. When rainwater and ‘run off’ enter the pool, they can change your water’s pH, calcium hardness, total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity and other chemical levels as well as bring contaminants (e.g. debris, dirt) into the pool. Because rainwater is generally acidic (see map showing pH of rainwater across U.S), then your pool water can become corrosive and cause damage to the plaster and metal parts of your pool.

The extent of the chemistry issues you’ll experience will depend on how much rain you get. A light rain, for example, should have very little affect on your pool water. Although, it is always best to be certain that your pool water chemistry is properly balanced at all times.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?
Keep ahead of the changes to your water by testing frequently during heavy rain periods. It is also a good idea to drain excess water, bringing your water to an appropriate level for proper skimming. If you have a Diatomaceous (D.E.) or Sand Filter with a multi-port valve, you can simply put it from vacuum to waste mode, to eliminate the excess water without putting the water through the filter.

If rain is a consistent problem, pool owners with cartridge filters should consider installing an outlet valve, after the pump, to pump water down to the proper skimmer level. Always be careful not to drain the water below the skimmer as you could run the pump dry and cause other problems.

Pool Care Tips For Freezing Temperatures!!! 🥶

When cold weather moves in, you may wonder how freezing temperatures will affect your pool and its equipment. Water expands when it freezes, which poses a danger to your pool's plumbing and equipment. Make sure your pool level is above the skimmer so you can run your pump. If your spigot or hose freezes, you will have no way to fill your pool.

Tips To Keep Your Pool and Equipment Safe During Freezing Temperatures

Run your pool pump continuously when temperatures are near or below freezing.
You don't need to run your heater, moving water likely will not freeze.
Disconnect any aerators and lines to slides.
Booster pumps for pool cleaners don’t need to run continuously.
Water feature pumps should be run and, valves should be open. Alternatively, you can cover and drain the pump and pipes.
What To Do If You Lose Power During A Freeze

Turn your time clock off or turn off equipment at the breaker.
Dial the multiport valve to backwash and remove the plug.
Open the air relief valve on the filter.
Remove plugs and lids from pumps (see above), motors, filters, heaters and chlorinators.
Put all of the removed plugs in a resealable bag and store them in a safe place until power is restored.
When milder weather returns, replace all plugs and lids.
Ensure there is water in the system before turning the power back on.
Automation Systems and Freezing Temperatures

If you have an automation system, a “freeze protection” feature was likely configured when your automation system was first installed. This feature will automatically turn on your key pumps when a predetermined outdoor temperature is reached, often set a few degrees above freezing. Once ambient temperatures go above the freeze protect point, your automation will return the equipment to its normal settings. Some automation systems rotate valves intermittently between “pool” and “spa” mode when in freeze protect, so you may hear pauses when your pump(s) are not running.

If your filter and/or feature pump(s) has not come on yet as temperatures near freezing, you can turn your key pumps on from your automations system's remote or app, or, at the outdoor control panel by changing the system setting to “Service” and turning on pumps with the appropriate buttons.

If you have an Intermatic Time Clock (yellow dial), flip the silver lever to the right to turn a pump on. If you turn a pump on before the time clock reaches the “Off” tab or tripper, you will have to turn the pump on again manually.

How to Prep your Pool for a Hurricane or Rainstorm

Storms are serious business, and can definitely cause a great deal of damage. Having a storm preparedness plan is very important, so you will be ready to keep your family and property safe during hurricane and tornado season. And preparing your pool is an important part of hurricane prep, which shouldn’t be overlooked!

During a storm or hurricane, dust and debris gets washed or blown into your pool, phosphates get deposited into your water and your chlorine, salt and minerals get diluted. Your pool can also potentially flood, damaging surrounding structures.

If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. Before rain hits:

Balance your pool properly. Get a free water test at your local Poolwerx for the best advice on what your pool needs to be balanced.
Consider adding some algaecide. This will help fight off many of the organic contaminants the rainwater introduces, making your pool easier to clean after the storm dissipates. Algaecide adds an extra layer of protection for your pool, preventing black, green and yellow algae growth, giving your pool a fighting chance.
Don’t drain your pool. Keeping enough water levels in your pool provides the weight necessary to hold the sides and bottom in place during the storm or hurricane. This is especially important as the heavy rains begin to fall, which could cause damage. If you have surrounding structures that can be damaged by water, you can lower your water levels by 1-2 feet.
Turn off your power! All electrical power to your pool should be turned off at the circuit breakers before the hurricane hits. Any and all exposed electrical equipment, such as motors for the pumps, should be tightly covered. If you have a gas heater, turn off the gas.
Remove all loose objects such as chairs, tables, toys, and pool equipment. Store all items in a secure indoor place. If applicable, you should also trim your trees. Any of these objects can become dangerous flying projectiles during a powerful storm.
