5 Reasons to Rethink Letting Your Dog Swim in Your Pool

Lots of dog owners let their dogs regularly take a dip in their pools to exercise or cool off in the blazing AZ heat. Dogs such as the Labrador Retriever, the Newfoundland, and the Standard Poodle are particularly fond of swimming. Unfortunately, letting your dog swim in your pool may put both your pool and your dog at risk. Here are 5 reasons you might rethink letting your pooch swim.

1. Dogs absorb much more chlorine than humans. If you have a chlorine pool, this can spell disaster for your water chemistry. You have to be diligent and add plenty of shock to your water after your dog swims, or you could end up with a green pool, especially at the peak of summer.

2. Dogs have sensitive skin. Their eyes, ears, and noses are more susceptible to chlorine than humans, and they can suffer from dull coats and dry, itchy skin if they’re exposed to chlorine. Make sure that you rinse your dog off if you let it swim in a chlorinated pool.

3. Dogs shed in the pool. All that fur can clog up your pump basket or skimmer and potentially cause damage to your equipment if you aren’t diligent about removing it.

4. Dogs will try to drink the pool water, which isn’t healthy for the dog, and it will likely cause your dog to have to urinate more frequently (which you don’t want in your pool, if you can avoid it).

5. Dogs should be monitored as attentively as children when swimming--especially if your dog is not a strong swimmer or has difficulty exiting your pool. Dogs are likely to panic when first learning to swim, so it’s important to build their confidence and ensure that they know how to use your pool steps or ladder.

If you do let your dog swim in your pool, it is important to ensure the safety and well-being of your pet and make sure that you take proper care of your pool to keep your water clean and blue. But, trust us, your pool company and your pool will thank you if keep your dogs out of the water.

5 Ways to Banish Bugs from your Pool:

Pools are an easy and accessible source of water for many desert critters, especially bugs. It can be common to find all sorts of bugs in and around your pool, including bees, wasps, water boatmen, backswimmers, and more. Encountering these insects can be not only unpleasant, but dangerous. Here are some tips for reducing the number of bugs attracted to your pool.

1. Keep your algae levels low. Bugs like the water boatman, which are small water-dwelling insects, feed on algae. Make sure you test your water frequently and get it treated if you notice algae growing on your pool walls or floor.
2. Skim the surface of your pool. Many insects, such as backswimmers, which are water-dwelling insects with a nasty sting, feed on other insects. Keeping your water clear of leaves and dead insects can help prevent more insects from becoming attracted to your pool.
3. Use LED lighting around your pool. LED lights give off less heat than other types of lighting, which can help prevent the number of bugs that would be attracted to a pool that is lit up for night swimming.
4. Treat your pool with chemicals. If your pool is a favorite meeting spot for bees and wasps, you may have success treating your pool with Skillet, an algaecide that makes the surface of the water difficult for flying insects to land on. In addition, make sure you are using the correct amounts of algaecide and chlorine in your water to prevent the accumulation of phosphates, which act as algae food.
5. If all else fails, contact us at Bright and Clear Pools to get a professional consultation!

Black Algae: What You Need to Know

We consider black algae to be the black plague of swimming pools; if it gets into an old, cracked plaster pool, it’s virtually impossible to get rid of. If you find black algae in your pool, it needs to be treated ASAP. The summer heat and humidity of the monsoon season makes algae grow explosively—it can take over a pool in a matter of days.

Black algae feels like a slimy, mossy raised surface. When you scrape it with your fingernail or a wire brush, the surface of it comes off, leaving a dark stain. This surface must be removed to kill the algae, which is one of the reasons black algae is so difficult to get rid of.

Here are some tips for treating black algae:

1. The simplest solution for treating black algae on a tile line is to rub a chlorine tab over the algae’s surface, and then wire brush the algae after the chlorine has killed it.
2. Regular wire brushing over any black algae spots is very important for preventing further growth.
3. Call the office if the problem gets out of hand—we treat small outbreaks of black algae using an algaecide and by raising the chlorine level of the pool at the same time. If the problem persists or worsens, we chlorine wash the pool, which usually does the trick. We can’t guarantee that a chlorine wash will remove stains caused by black algae, but it usually stops the outbreak.

Planning on hosting a pool party for the ? Here's some tips for caring for your pool before and after.

1. Know that the more people are in your pool, the more quickly chlorine will be used up. The summer heat will also cause your pool to use up chlorine more quickly.

2. If you feel comfortable doing so, ask your guests to shower or hose off before they get in the pool, as if they were swimming at a public pool. This will make it a little easier on your pool to compensate for the amount of people in the water.

3. Make sure you add liquid chlorine or granular shock to your pool after the party. This will help reduce the chances of your pool turning green or cloudy after a big event.

4. If you need some extra help preparing your pool for a party or returning your pool to its pristine state after, give us a call! We're happy to help.

Everyone at Bright and Clear wishes you and your family a happy and safe 4th of July!
