EVERYBODY WANTS THE TITLE… UNTIL THEY FEEL THE WEIGHT OF IT.
Everybody wants to say, “I’m the boss.”
Everybody wants to say, “I’m the CEO.”
Everybody wants to be called Pastor, Minister, Leader, Supervisor, Team Lead, Director, or Owner.
But here’s the question nobody asks:
CAN YOU STILL LEAD WHEN NOBODY SHOWS UP?
Can you still lead when the people you were counting on quit, call out, walk away, disappoint you, misunderstand you—or simply decide they’re not carrying the load anymore?
Because leadership looks good when the team is full, the schedule is covered, the business is running smoothly, the church is growing, and everybody is saying YES.
But you don’t really understand the weight of leadership until everybody else puts the weight down—and you’re the one left carrying it.
That’s when you find out whether you wanted the TITLE…
or whether you were truly prepared for the ASSIGNMENT.
Everybody wants to be the boss until the whole team calls out.
Everybody wants to be the Team Lead until nobody shows up and the work still has to get done.
Everybody wants to own the business until you and your spouse are doing the work of 10 people while still answering phones, handling clients, fixing schedules, solving problems, and making sure everybody else gets paid.
And yes… everybody wants a ministry title until ministry gets heavy too.
Leadership is NOT just telling people what to do.
Leadership is showing up when nobody else does.
Leadership is serving when you’re tired.
Leadership is carrying responsibility when you didn’t create the problem.
Leadership is being willing to get your hands dirty.
Leadership is praying for people who don’t even realize you’re carrying them in prayer.
Leadership is making hard decisions that everybody may not understand.
Leadership is standing in the gap when the people you thought would stand beside you suddenly aren’t there.
And sometimes leadership means looking at your husband or wife and saying, “Well, it looks like it’s us again. Let’s get it done.”
I’ve learned this in business AND ministry:
You cannot fall in love with the title and hate the weight.
Because eventually the applause stops.
Eventually somebody disagrees with you.
Eventually somebody quits.
Eventually somebody disappoints you.
Eventually somebody doesn’t show up.
And when that happens, the assignment is still sitting there waiting on the LEADER.
Jesus showed us that leadership is also service:
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” — Matthew 20:26
So whether you’re leading a cleaning crew, a company, a ministry, a church, a department, a household, or a team…
DON’T JUST ASK FOR THE POSITION. ASK YOURSELF IF YOU’RE PREPARED FOR THE RESPONSIBILITY.
Because a title might get people to recognize you…
But the weight will reveal whether you can actually LEAD.
Real leaders don’t just point at the work that needs to be done.
When everybody else drops the weight, a real leader is prepared to pick it up.
Business. Ministry. Leadership. Life.
Before you ask God for a bigger platform, a bigger business, a bigger team, or a bigger assignment—make sure you’re preparing yourself to carry the bigger weight that comes with it. 💙⚔️
