This was a fun one! The door was 24” wide and the old water heater was 28” wide, and since we’re plumbers not carpenters, taking the door and trim off wasn’t really an option in our eyes 😂 So we did what had to be done — grabbed the Sawzall and went to town! Wish I would’ve gotten better pictures because we literally had that tank cut in half just to get it out. End result though? Brand new water heater installed, brought up to code, and working exactly how it should. It was a tough fight, but Drain Doctor got it done again! 💪

Removed an old 3-handle shower valve and upgraded it to a modern single-handle Delta Faucet valve using an oversized cover plate for a clean finish.

Upgraded an old gate valve to a new 1/4-turn ball valve, fixed a leak above the water heater, and made room for an expansion tank. On city water, most homes are closed systems, so an expansion tank is essential to protect your heater from pressure spikes and keep your warranty intact. Little upgrades like this save headaches down the road!

Simple fix that potentially saved a big problem.

If your expansion tank isn’t properly supported, it’s only a matter of time before it causes issues. When one of these tanks fails, it can fill with up to 2 gallons of water. At about 8 pounds per gallon, plus the weight of the tank itself (around 5–7 pounds), that’s 20+ pounds hanging on your piping.

If it’s strapped to CPVC or just hanging off PEX, that’s not something you want to trust long-term.

We exposed the pipe, drilled an access point to run our jetter hose, cleared the blockage, then removed a section of pipe to install a proper two-way cleanout for future service.

PSA: Having an accessible cleanout can save you money and time when it comes to clearing a clog. Proper access makes all the difference.
