I found this in a client's stand-alone dehumidifier.
The problem does not generally occur if the unit is hooked to a hose that drains by gravity (because no water should get into the holding tank). But, if the tank drains automatically via an internal pump, the tank will always have SOME water in it.
When folks have to manually empty the tank / bucket, they tend to notice microbial growth and can take action by cleaning it. However, if they are relying on an internal pump, they tend to "walk away" and never look at the tank again...resulting in what you see in the video below.
