Earlier this month, PK-30 and Häfele America Co. brought the New York design community together at 20 West 22nd Street for an evening built around both.

First, the learning: an AIA HSW continuing education session, Interior Glass Walls for Flexibility, Health, Safety + Wellness, worth 1 Learning Unit, on how interior glass wall systems shape flexible, healthy, and adaptable workplaces.

Then the tasting: a guided flight of small-batch and limited-production tequilas from respected Mexican distilleries, curated and hosted by Ruben Suare.

Sightlines to all four exposures, kept open through the middle of the floorplate. For Harvest’s Flatiron District office, PK-30 installed the wall systems that divide a 10,000 square foot workspace without cutting off its light, working with Front Studio Architects.

The design put a central spine of breakout rooms through the plan, the kind of division that usually kills transparency. Here it doesn’t. 158.6 linear feet of PK-30 wall systems, 15 swing doors and 41 fixed panels in slim aluminum frames and glass, hold privacy and acoustic comfort where the rooms need it while preserving views visible from all four sides.

Divided where it counts, open everywhere else.

For Lou Malnati’s new Surprise, AZ location, PK-30 built the door and panel systems behind them, working with Knauer Inc. across a 6,000 square foot space.

Room 1 runs on bi-parting sliding doors, roughly 66»W by 96»H, with six vertical mullions and recessed suspension tracks for smooth operation, backed by six fixed panels. Satin stainless bar pulls and 10» kick plates handle the daily wear. Room 2 uses a single swing door, about 36»W by 96»H, with ADA-compliant kick plates and a clerestory fixed panel above to keep light and privacy in balance.

52.3 linear feet in all, finished in PPG Duracron Sharp Cheddar and built for a high-traffic restaurant.

Ninety openings across three floors, and every one reads the same.

When Square, now Block, turned the 1917 St. Louis Post-Dispatch building into a 225,000 square foot headquarters for Square and Cash App, PK-30 was engaged for the enclosed rooms on Levels 4, 5, and 6, released for fabrication as a single 27-sheet binder covering 90 openings.

The design asked for one partition module to serve the whole floorplate: same glass, same black frame, same horizontal divisions, whether the opening held a single office or a twenty-foot conference wall. In a century-old press building where almost nothing repeats, that meant absorbing dozens of one-off field dimensions without letting the differences show.

Two panel types cover the entire scope, framed in black anodic aluminum and glazed in tempered laminated low-iron glass. Two mullion lines, set to the transom above every door and the top of the metal base, run unbroken through every office and corridor no matter how wide the opening beneath them.

At the elevator lobbies, slim posts carry the panel loads and conceal the wiring for card readers and electric strikes, so a secured entry reads as clear glass instead of security hardware.

175 fixed panels, 84 swing doors, 1,746 linear feet, held to one panel language.

The detail most systems can’t hold: a four-inch fin running clean from floor to ceiling.

For Translation LLC’s Brooklyn headquarters, vonDALWIG Architecture wanted prominent vertical fins extending off each panel’s stiles, anchoring every panel to the surrounding architecture. PK-30 engineered a custom 4” extension on each vertical stile using CNC machinery, so the lines stay uninterrupted top to bottom.

Then the wood. PK-30 fabricated custom wood swing doors and matching wall panels in a finish tailored to complement the system, so the doors and adjacent walls read as one continuous material. High-use hardware underneath, minimalist look on the surface.

A 385-pound sliding door that runs silent. For Perkins+Will’s Union Square studio, PK-30 engineered the entry portal at the center of an award-winning workplace, a 16,000 square foot office recognized in Architectural Record’s Good Design Is Good Business Awards.

The entry door spans 6’-6” wide by 8’-0” high. An FSB pocket door deadlock with key and thumbturn allows full door travel and security. Around it, fixed panels reach 12 feet wide, internally butt-glazed with custom laminated glass to minimize vertical framing. Those panels were knocked down for delivery and reassembled on site.

The glass design is Perkins+Will’s own: frosted accents, mirrored detailing, matte black frames. PK-30’s sliding door completed the transition.

12 feet wide, 12 feet tall, one sliding panel. For Häfele’s New York showroom, PK-30 engineered and installed this custom sliding glass door as the room’s singular architectural feature.

Scale set the terms. Custom structural engineering carries the weight of the assembly, a bespoke handle meets the hand, and custom glass panels hold an integrated privacy screen. With floor modification off the table, the closer went overhead: a concealed door closer with no floor track. Glass runs quarter-inch clear low-iron, fully tempered, the full twelve feet.

At that size, it still moves smoothly, quietly, and precisely.
