Like I've said before, there is no such thing as a flushable wipe!

Flushable wipes clog our pipes! The Byron public works department kindly reminds residents to avoid flushing "flushable" wipes, including sanitizing wipes, baby wipes, and personal hygiene wipes. The wipes turn into wads, then congeal with grease and cooking fats (also improperly sent down drains) to cause blockages in our pumps and pipes, and potentially send sewage back up into basements and waterways. This picture includes mostly wipes, but also includes grease and articles of clothing removed from the sewer lines at our treatment plant. Please toss everything but toilet paper in the trash, not the toilet!!

Do you know which toilet paper is actually "septic safe"?

Many of our customers are quite surprised to learn that the "septic safe " toilet paper they've used over the years is far from being so. Ideally the top layer of your tank known as the "Scum Layer" should be less than an inch thick. When you use the wrong TP, it adds to this layer, making it difficult, and in some cases, IMPOSSIBLE to clean out. Not to mention the high risk for a backup into your home.

STAY AWAY from: Charmin, Quilted Northern, and Cottonelle.

And don't forget to pump every 2 years!

Why are camera inspections so important? Well in this example: From a bird's eye view, the baffle looks full and intact; however, after dropping the camera in the tank we can see that the top few inches of the outlet baffle have deteriorated and fallen into the tank.

In order to work properly, the outlet baffle needs to be higher than the outlet pipe, ensuring that solids floating across the top of the tank don't get sucked out into the drain field.

Fortunately in this particular situation, the solids leaving the tank only plugged the outlet line (causing the septic water to flow out of the top of the tank, being that it was unable to flow to the field) but not the septic field itself.
