A new chapter in local history begins this Thursday (tomorrow!) at King!

Join us on Thursday, May 28 at 4 PM at the Commandant's House at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King for the official signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Waupaca Historical Society and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, marking the transition of the historic Commandant House into a public site for tours and education.

As part of this partnership, the Waupaca Historical Society will work to preserve and restore the historic Commandant’s House so future generations can continue to learn from and enjoy this important landmark.

Following the ceremony on Thursday, Wisconsin Veterans Museum Director Chris Kolakowski will present at the Marden Center on the history of King and Wisconsin’s role in America250. Refreshments will be served.

We’re honored to be part of preserving and sharing this important piece of Wisconsin history with the community. Be sure to join us!

In March 2025, Arlington National Cemetery removed its webpage dedicated to Women’s History, a resource that once made it easy to explore the names, stories, and resting places of servicewomen laid to rest there.

As we approach Memorial Day, we invite our community to honor the women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice protected our freedoms and paved the way for the rights and opportunities women have today.

Those stories are visible and accessible on our website. You can now explore the lives and locations of these remarkable women through our dedicated page.

For those able to visit Arlington National Cemetery, we encourage you to walk its grounds with intention, visit their graves, reflect on their service, and carry their stories forward.

If you’re unable to visit in person, you can still be part of this remembrance. Take time to read, learn, and share their stories. When we tell their stories, we ensure their legacy lives on and continues to inspire future generations.

Explore their stories here: https://foundationforwomenwarriors.org/the-women-of-arlington-national-cemetery/

We're so lucky to have this resource!

I'm still home without power after the ice storm, but my sweet kid checked on Forest Cemetery for me. It was hit pretty hard, but miraculously, most stones seemed to have escaped major damage.

If you're in a cemetery, please avoid any fallen or hanging branches- especially if they're touching stones. Unstable stones can be extremely dangerous, so err on the side of caution and don't risk injury due to curiosity. You could also damage the stone and most are irreplaceable.

Yes, it's sad to see so many damaged and broken old trees after storms. I try to remind myself that like humans, trees have a lifespan that often ends by accident or disease, and like the loved ones resting below the earth, we're never ready to say goodbye.

Luckily, friends of the cemetery have been planting dozens of new trees, so as the old ones fall away, the younger ones' roots grow deeper and take over. Hopefully we have many decades with these new beauties!

I also feel SUPER justified in taking literal thousands of photos of the trees and stones at our cemeteries; it makes it a bit less sad when they're captured forever. I'll share some of those pictures once I get out and see the difference for myself. They may not be my happiest "before and after" photos, but they're just as important to me as the stone transformations.

I hope you've all stayed safe and warm during this icy event. Thank you to the utility workers, firefighters, and to every essential worker who keeps our county running. You're appreciated!
