Spotted lanternfly headlines are everywhere right now, and it's easy to feel like every bug in your yard is one. Your sprinkler is not watering your trees. 💦

A big myth in July: "the sprinkler hits the tree too, so it's fine." It isn't. Sprinklers wet the top inch of soil — exactly where trees don't have feeder roots. The roots that need water are 6–18 inches down, especially during a Tri-State July heatwave.

Once or twice a week, run a slow trickle from a hose at the base of each mature tree for 20–30 minutes. Add a 2–3 inch mulch donut (not a volcano). That's how trees survive July.

July is the worst month to "clean up" your trees.

Every summer, well-meaning homeowners reach for the loppers to thin out the canopy or shorten a "messy" limb. The problem: cuts made in July invite borers, fuel disease spread (oak wilt is still active), and stress trees that are already battling heat and drought.

A few exceptions exist — dead, damaged, or safety-hazard limbs should still come out. Everything else can wait until winter dormancy.

Circles of dead grass in your lawn? It's probably fungus.

Two fungal diseases peak in the Tri-State in July: brown patch (large brown circles, often with a dark ring) and dollar spot (small silver-dollar-sized straw-colored patches). Both are fueled by hot days, humid nights, and lawns watered at the wrong time.

The fix isn't more water — it's smarter water. Morning only. Deep, not frequent. Mow taller. Skip the evening sprinkler.

If you see this bug in your yard, kill it.

Spotted lanternfly is one of the most destructive invasive pests in the Tri-State, and July is when populations explode. Red-spotted nymphs are everywhere now, and adults are emerging this month — feeding on maples, walnuts, fruit trees, and grapevines, and weeping sticky "honeydew" that grows black sooty mold all over your property.

NY, NJ, and CT all officially ask homeowners to crush them on sight. But for trees already under attack, you need treatment, not just stomping.

Cool-season grasses across NY, NJ, and CT (fescue, rye, Kentucky bluegrass) naturally go dormant in summer heat. The blades turn brown, but the crown and roots are very much alive.

Watering it back to green every week stresses the grass more than the heat does. Sometimes the right move is to let it sleep — and trust it'll bounce back in September.
