PART 1: ACIDIC CLEANERS

Acidic cleaners are designed to break down mineral buildup, hard water deposits, rust, and soap scum. They work by dissolving alkaline soils, which makes them very effective but also means surface knowledge is critical.

Common acidic cleaners many of us use:
• Bar Keepers Friend (oxalic acid)
• CLR (lactic & gluconic acids)
• Lime Out (sulfamic or phosphoric acids)
• Lime-A-Way (phosphoric acid)
• Vinegar (acetic acid)
• Citric acid–based cleaners

What acidic cleaners are best for:
Removing hard water buildup
Dissolving limescale and calcium deposits
Breaking down rust stains
Tackling soap scum on non-stone surfaces

Important safety and surface notes:
Acidic cleaners can etch or permanently damage natural stone like marble, granite, travertine, and limestone
They can dull or strip protective coatings if overused
Never mix acidic cleaners with bleach
Always rinse thoroughly and use proper ventilation
PPE is recommended, even for “natural” acids

Acidic cleaners are powerful tools when used correctly, but using the wrong product on the wrong surface can cause irreversible damage. Product knowledge is not optional in professional cleaning it protects your client, your reputation, and the home you’re working in.
